Alshon Jeffery Week 9 Fantasy Outlook Versus Jason Verrett, Chargers

alex bylineChargers CB Jason Verrett is likely to shadow Bears WR Alshon Jeffery when their teams face off in Week 9. Verrett’s been one of top up-and-coming cover-corners in the league and San Diego has used him to shadow other teams’ best receivers. It only makes sense to project Jeffery drawing the matchup versus Verrett for at least a significant portion of his snaps Monday night.

Some in RW Nation have asked about what this means for Jeffery. For comparative reasons, these are the players who have been treated in a similar way by the Chargers defensive coaching staff this season:

AJ Green – 4 targets, 3 receptions, 45 yards, 1 TD (10.5 standard, 13.5 PPR)
Antonio Brown (with Mike Vick at QB) – 6 targets, 3 receptions, 45 yards (4.5 standard, 7.5 PPR)
Amari Cooper – 6 targets, 5 receptions, 133 yards, 1 TD (19.3 standard, 24.3 PPR)
Steve Smith Sr. (injured during game) – 7 targets, 5 receptions, 82 yards (8.2 standard, 13.2 PPR)

The obvious positive thing we notice is that Jeffery has a significant size and reach advantage on Verrett and does not “win” as a receiver by using traits that Verrett has been generally good at defending against with his change-of-direction ability and closing burst, anyway. Jeffery will be used to win at the catch-point and he’s simply bigger and beastlier than Verrett – we could say that in confidence even if we hadn’t evaluated both with our own eyes in live settings as prospects.

AJ Green’s crappy game versus Verrett (which was saved by a touchdown) worries you, as does his lack of targets in the contest. However, when you look at how the game-script unfolded in Week 2 for the Bengals, Green got that TD really early on with Dalton fantasy cock-blocking by getting others to Jones and Eifert. Furthermore, it was by far Giovani Bernard’s busiest game of the season as a rusher, getting 20 carries and 23 touches in all. The Bengals offensive staff had something going on it really liked with Bernard which limited usual opportunities for Green.

RosterWatch loves Verrett as a player, but we’re not ready to put him in any kind of “shut down” category just yet. Roll with Alshon as you normally would in Week 9. If he lets you down, it’s highly unlikely to be because he gets shut down by Jason Verrett.

  1. Team Name: …But Im not wrong (Record: 6 – 2)

I’m in a standard 12 team dynasty league.

    Here’s my roster:
    QB – RIvers
WR – Hopkins, Cobb, Diggs, Hurns, Agholor, Perriman
RB – Doug Martin, McCoy, Sims, Karlos, David Johnson
    TE – Bennett
IR – Jamaal Charles, Steve Smith Sr.

Who do you recommend I drop next week so I can roster a backup QB (Rivers’ bye is wk 10)? FYI: Tevin Coleman is on my leagues WW too.

Would love to get your thoughts on how I might upgrade my roster for the rest of the season.

    1. Any chance for help on what to do for a QB2 and if Tevin Coleman is needed in my lineup?

  2. I’m currently rolling the dice with Marquess Wilson (Bears, WR) as my flex since I don’t dare start Donte Moncrief vs. the Broncos. But if T.Y. is out, would it be wise to stick Gore in as the flex?

Team: Three-Eyed Raven (G.o.T names league)
    Record: 5-3
