Devonta Freeman Ahead of Tevin Coleman at RB to Start Falcons OTAs

One of the more interesting camp battles fantasy owners will want to monitor coming into the 2015 fantasy football season will be in Atlanta, where Falcons rookie Tevin Coleman (who said upon being drafted in the third-round this year that he would start immediately) will fight for snaps against incumbent second-year runner Devonta Freeman.

As we’ve said all along here at RW, Coleman taking Freeman’s job without a good fight wasn’t wise to assume. Many fans discount Freeman’s mass and see him as a “smaller back” even though Coleman and Freeman weighed the exact same at their respective combine weigh-ins.

According to The Augusta Chronicle, Freeman is out to the early lead – taking the first-team reps in early OTAs – and has drawn major praise from New Falcons HC Dan Quinn.

“To me, having the best off-season you’ve ever had, he’s one of the guys who is like ‘Here coach, I’m ready,’” Quinn said. “He wanted to be the first at doing everything. That told you the competitor he is.”

“Now to add what he is doing in the run game, I can’t wait to watch him work,” Quinn said. “He doesn’t back down from anything. That’s one of the things I like about Devonta the most. He gets every challenge and ‘Yep, I’m ready for the next one.’ That’s one of the things I really do admire about him and his game.”

Quinn also was quoted in the article as saying Freeman has “terrific hands.”

Devonta Freeman himself even said it was not going to be easy for Coleman to come in usurp his role.

“This means a lot to me. This has always been my dream. I never had a dream to come to the NFL and play second to no man.”

Coleman owners (or prospective Coleman owners) in dynasty need to take serious note. We also view these developments as clear enough evidence to start floating trade offers to the Freeman owner in your league in case he can be had at value by an owner worried about assuming the risks involved with Coleman’s new presence.
