Fantasy Football: Latest NFL Running Back News Coming Into Fall Camps

Here’s a rundown of the latest news concerning NFL running backs:

The Browns don’t see Duke Johnson as the starter. This is great news for Isaiah Crowell owners, who now only have Terrence West to worry about stealing starts, snaps and goal-line touches … As for Johnson, think of him potentially as the Gio Bernard to Crowell’s Jeremy Hill.

It looks like Fred Jackson is going to make the cut in Buffalo. We were a bit worried that the old man had finally worn out his welcome, but it appears he’s going to maintain a spot in the backfield. How he’ll be used is yet to be seen  though. LeSean McCoy can do everything FJax can do and on much younger legs.

Teams are sniffing around Ray Rice these days. One unnamed team was close to signing him, but ownership nixed the deal at the last minute. He may yet be worth drafting in very deep and keeper leagues.

Denver back Ronnie Hillman is on the roster bubble. Hillman isn’t that special in Denver, but he could easily compete for real touches in most backfields. Keep an eye on him.

C.J. Spiller could catch an excess of 60 passes this season, according to some in the New Orleans press. This doesn’t sound out of reach if you consider that ex-Saints Travaris Cadet and Pierre Thomas combined for 83 receptions last season.

Don’t be fooled by Adrian Peterson’s 3 year deal. He’s only guaranteed to be a Viking for 2015.

The Lions seem unusually concerned about Joique Bell’s health this season, especially his Achilles and knee. That or they are just really excited about Ameer Abdullah. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. This doesn’t say as much about Bell as it does about Abdullah, who is going to be of considerable fantasy value in PPR leagues if nothing else.

There’s still no clarity on the Patriots’ passing back job as all available candidates are still in the running. I’m not touching a Pats’ back not named LeGarrette Blount this season apart from injury.

Looking for a deep deep sleeper at the RB position? Try Antonio Andrews of the Titans. Chances are Bishop Sankey and David Cobb stay ahead of him in the backfield hierarchy, but rumors of Andrews’ skill just won’t go away.

Supposedly, the former Jets coaching staff limited Chris Ivory’s carries last year due to injury fears. He could receive a new lease on life this season under Chan Gailey. He’s a great value pick in any format.

I know we haven’t had training camp yet, but how reliable is the news on browns rb situation? Everyone else seems to be saying duke will be or browns want him to be the starter. That being said regardless won’t it still be a similiar situation to last year where pettine would change the rb daily?!

    1. Yeah, they may want him to be the guy. I’m sure they want Manziel to be the starter too. The fact of the matter is that neither player has shown that they are the best guy for the job yet. Things may change throughout the season, and no one Browns RB might be a lock every week, but if I’m hitching my wagon to one of them it’s going to be Crowell until we see something else transpire. Crowell’s knock is his ball security, but he’s in the same position as pretty much any other lead back. If they can’t hold onto the ball, they get benched. I’m only targeting Johnson in pprs, as he’s probably going to see most of his early season work catching passes, and dynasty leagues.

what about any news or breakdown and analysis of the giants rb situation? I took jennings last year based on your guys suggestion. Of course he got hurt again, vereen is in town now, and with how not so good williams did last year, I am thinking the guy to draft regardless might be vereen since giants like a rb of his style and haven’t had one in a while.

  3. Vereen might actually help Jennings stay healthy by limiting his touches. I still like Jennings to lead the backfield in touches and goal line looks. Vereen does seem like the best value pick though, especially in pprs.

  4. Are you guys going to be on SiriusXm again this year? Your show is by far the best thing on that channel.

    1. Thanks Vic, you should let them know that! *Tightens tie and in best Rodney Dangerfield voice says “We get no respect!”* We will be on Sundays 5-8pm CST in August and Saturdays 5-7pm CST during the season. Thanks for being a part of this.
