Percy Harvin Traded to Seattle

Former Vikings utility man, Percy Harvin, is bringing his talents to the Pacific Northwest. A blockbuster trade has gone down between the Vikings and the Seahawks that brings Harvin to Seattle, reuniting Harvin with his former OC Darrell Bevell—and sending a first round pick plus change to Minnesota.

This is not a move I would have suspected, as Seattle seemed to have talent to work with in Golden Tate, Sidney Rice, and Doug Baldwin, but apparently Pete Carroll learned a valuable lesson in his most recent playoff loss to the Falcons; You can never have too many good receivers.

Harvin will line up with Rice on two-wide sets and probably play the slot in threes, while Tate takes the outside. One might think this doesn’t bode quite as well for Harvin’s production because he is no longer the sole capable receiver on his team, but the fact that he has a much more talented quarterback to get him the ball will more than make up for it. Russell Wilson is a rising star in the NFL already, and his trajectory just got higher with the acquisition.

Wilson is also the player I see getting the biggest boost from a fantasy perspective. I would not at all be shocked if he puts up top seven, or better, fantasy QB numbers in his second year in the league. Harvin should hold as a top ten fantasy receiver in his new offense.

As for Tate and Rice, I see big games, but only on occasion. Tate probably won’t be worth playing outside of 14-16 team leagues, but Rice could see some value increase as a primary red-zone target though. We must take a wait and see approach on Marshawn Lynch’s production. Reason will tell you that fewer carries, and he will see less totes with Harvin in the fold, will result in less fantasy points. In Minnesota, well I’m not sure how this helps them immediately. Adrian Peterson will be largely unaffected by everything, but this leaves the receiving corps in shambles.  A first round pick could net them a talent at the position, but that’s always a gamble, and Cordarrelle Patterson will be long gone by the time Minnesota gets to make Seattle’s pick at 25. You have to imagine they will try to get Greg Jennings or Mike Wallace in a trade.

In any case, Seattle has just put themselves in the upper tier of NFL teams, as far as I’m concerned. Too bad they’re in the same division as San Francisco.
