Dynasty Rookie Spotlight: D.J. Foster, WR New England Patriots

D.J. Foster, WR New England Patriots
Height: 5′ 10”
Weight: 193 lbs
Hands: 9 1/4’’
Arm: 30 1/2’’
40 yard dash: 4.57 (Combine)

NFL Comparison: Jeremy Kerley, Bruce Ellington, Dion Lewis

Scouting Notes: For all intents and purposes, Foster is a running back. He was for the majority of his career at Arizona State, where he was a more successful in the backfield than he was at WR. It wasn’t his idea to change positions initially — coaches at ASU prompted him after losing some major talent at the position (i.e. Jaelen Strong). One would think Foster might move back to his natural position for the best chance at thriving in the NFL, but he has a different idea, and we’ve got to accept it. Skillwise, Foster makes sense as an a RB. He’s shifty, with good feet and nice burst off the line — though only serviceable long-speed. He has a knack for evading tacklers and can change direction without losing momentum as well. He does possess more than capable ball skills though, so maybe there’s something to this wideout thing yet. Foster struggles with press coverage and he often has trouble with contested catches, which is an issue considering he doesn’t create separation easily. His ability to play the WR position with sustained success at any real level is still in question.

Fantasy Outlook: It’s a good thing Foster landed in New England, as they have a history of utilizing RBs who are able pass catchers and making lemonade out of lemons. I don’t see a space for him to provide consistent production, though. Should he make the roster, his fantasy numbers will be spotty at best initially, especially with more rounded WRs and a healthy Dion Lewis back in the fold — Lewis does what Foster can do but better. My fantasy hands are off of Foster for the near future in all but the deepest of dynasty leagues.

Thank you for the quick response! To answer the caliber of player in later rounds question In our league being the 14 team and 4 keepers we have I believe 56 players in total kept by teams, so the board will be very slim after about the 3rd-4th round. In our league, Floyd probably goes in the 3rd round being a majority of players kept is WR. I think there is a total of 5 QBs being kept by teams, so there will be a lot more available come the 4-5th round and talking to another player in the league, Mariota will probably go in the 7th or 8th round, as most of the players are trying to grab as many good-decent WR and RB available. To give alittle insite to the board, the top RBs that will be available come draft day for us is: Peterson, Elliot, Lacy, Forte, Demarco Murray, and Gore/Melvin Gordon with the top 4 being taken before the middle of the 1st round, and the others named will probably be taken before the middle of the 2nd round. Very slim pickings

    1. We would def keep DeSean and JStew then. Pray for one of the first 5 RBs you mention are there for you in RD1, look for QB value in RD2/3 and keep an eye on WR value (i.e.- John Brown, Diggs, White, Dorsett, Tavon, Agholor, Perriman). Good luck.
