Mike Glennon, QB NC State

Height: 6’6”
Weight: 230 lb
Age: 23

NFL Comparison:

Ryan Mallett – Joe Flacco

NFL Fit:

For some reason, the Houston Texans come to mind.

Evaluation:

Mike Glennon has the “purest” NFL arm of any quarterback prospect in this draft. He’s got a rocket and can make every professional throw in the book. The ball explodes out of his hand with great acceleration. He drives a catch-able ball with velocity and power. Relatively mobile for a 6’6” guy, he also makes throws on the move. Glennon is willing to be a judicious passer, taking what the defense gives him rather than constantly forcing the ball down field. He has experience under center and in the shotgun. If concerns about decision making and accuracy can be squashed through the draft process, he could be the first quarterback selected in late April.

Generally speaking, Glennon is a 60% completion passer. His 58% as a senior is not good enough. He misses high fairly often. He has a good touchdown/interception ratio but the interceptions he throws are really bad. He makes some very questionable decisions and forces too many throws. His confidence in his arm gets him in trouble. Glennon’s prowess as passer lends the idea that some of the deficiencies in his game will improve once surrounded with more complimentary NFL talent, schemes, and coaching.

Glennon detractors will point out that he’s been sacked 67 times over the last two seasons. That is a frightening number that brings his pocket presence into question. Again, this is an area that proper NFL personnel and coaching should help alleviate. Still, Glennon will have to learn to protect himself, quickly. Many of these sacks come under pressure as Glennon stands tall until the last second looking to throw the ball. The film shows a lot of encouraging signs. Glennon is calm in the pocket as the pressure comes, keeping his eyes down field and stepping up. He’s hard to bring down. Glennon’s surprising mobility is evident on countless designed rollouts. Most importantly, he does have pocket mobility.

This year against Florida State, a front seven chalk full of NFL talent, Glennon put his pocket mobility on display.
