Trashman’s Garbage Grab: Week 1

Trashman BylineIt’s that time of year again friends, when I put on my big yellow gloves, and start sifting the the dumpster of waiver wire refuse to find the trashiest of players to roster in your deepest and/or daily leagues. This is your week 1 Garbage Grab. Hold your nose, it could get smelly…

Benny Cunningham RB, Rams: Should Tre Mason not play in the Rams’ season opener against Seattle (it’s not looking good as of Saturday) it will be Cunningham’s backfield for the day. The only problem is that it’s against Seattle, arguably the league’s best defense. What Cunningham has going for him is that he’s a great pass-catching back, which frees him up a bit in the run game. Owned in less than 10% of leagues, he makes for an intriguing flex play in week 1 and a cheap, contrarian play in large-pool DFS tournaments.

Gary Barnidge TE, Browns: Barnidge has the benefit of being the primary tight end on a team with few receivers. The Browns initially brought Rob Housler in to be the pass-catching TE, but he’s struggled thus far as usual, leaving Barnidge to usurp the job. He’s in the grab because if the Jets are weak anywhere on defense, it’s against tight ends. They’re the 3rd best matchup in our proprietary Matchup Tool. No point in listing his availability here. He’s on your waiver wire.

Tyler Lockett WR, Seahawks: It’s yet to be seen if the ‘Hawks can support two WRs in fantasy, but this is the guy I want to have in my lineup to discover if it’s a possibility. Lockett can play all over the field, and that’s where Seattle is going to use him from the get-go – everywhere. What makes Lockett a good garbage grab player is that he doesn’t need a ton of targets to do his damage. He can make your fantasy day in only a few plays. He’s especially valuable in leagues that give points for returns. Lockett is owned in only 27% of season-long leagues.

Brandon Coleman WR, Saints: In what is primed to be a shootout with the Cardinals, Coleman is a starting receiver attached to Drew Brees’ arm. We love Coleman’s 6’6’’ height, and we love his solid hands too. As Colston continues his decline from being a top-end WR in the NFL, we fully expect Coleman to step in to fill his shoes. This week’s matchup is a fine one, as Arizona is middling against the pass.

Tyrod Taylor QB, Bills: Taylor’s got legs, and he knows how to use them. I don’t know how well his arm is going to hold up, but Taylor is going to get you points on the ground. He’s basically a running back that can throw TDs, and that makes for great fantasy. Owned in only 9% of leagues, he has a nice matchup this week against Indy’s beatable defense and will likely be playing from behind and in hurry-up fashion.

Mike Tolbert RB, Panthers: Tolbert, or “Tub of Goo” as he’s so affectionately referred to in Carolina, is going to see snaps at receiver, H-back, and running back this season with Benjamin on IR. We’ve seen in the past that he’s effective as a pass catcher, and to be honest, Tolbert might be the best playmaker the Panthers have right now aside from Stewart. I’m not afraid of using him as my flex in deep leagues- this week and most others, in fact. Tub of Goo is owned in less than 1% of leagues.

Crockett Gillmore TE, Ravens: A RW favorite from last year’s rookie draft class, Gillmore is ahead of Maxx Williams as the starting TE in Baltimore according to our sources at practice. Joe Flacco loves his tight ends, and Gillmore is a beast of one at 6’6’’, 270 pounds. Don’t be surprised if he’s Flacco’s favorite target in the end zone all season, or at least until Perriman returns. I really like him this week against the Broncos who are the 9th best TE matchup of the week per the Matchup Tool.

Kamar Aiken WR, Ravens: Speaking of Ravens pass-catchers, Aiken is going to be on the field every offensive down. He’s bigger than you think at 6’2’’, 215 lbs, and should see at least 5 targets against an admittedly tough Broncos pass defense. Fortunately for him, most of that attention will go to Steve Smith Sr. Aiken is owned in 3% of leagues.

Andy Dalton QB, Bengals: Dalton is the beneficiary of Oakland’s weak pass defense in week 1. OC Hue Jackson said that they plan on “opening it up” on offense this year, and what better time to do that than against his former team who should have never fired him – especially when all of his offensive weapons are healthy. Dalton is going to go big this week, just keep in mind that he may toss an interception or two in the process. He’s owned in only 25% of leagues.

  1. Trashman – great article as always. Could use your advice. I’m looking for the stash players and who to drop to put them on my roster. Here is the question – Would you swap them out anyone on my bench roster for Coleman, Perriman, or Tyrod Taylor? 12 team 1/2 point PPR:

    Jay Cutler
    Reggie Bush
    Alfred Blue
    Markus Wheton
    Terrance Williams

    Thanks!

    1. brandon or tevin coleman?

      1. Brandon – I would have grabbed Tevin in an instant if he was on waivers.

Hahaha Mike Tolbert. Jesus Christ. So much trash to be found. I always love these.

  3. Agholor or Charles Johnson in my ppr WR3 tonight? On fence. Currently have Johnson playing.
