2015 Salary Cap and Free Agency Overview: NFC East
As we prepare for our annual trip to the NFL Scouting Combine, we will analyze the salary cap and free agent ramifications of each division in the NFL. Here, we kick off the series with the NFC East.
Philadelphia Eagles
Currently an estimated $18.9M in cap space for 2015 (projection via Overthecap.com), without many big name players set to hit free agency.
Notable Free Agents: Jeremy Maclin, Mark Sanchez, Chris Polk (RFA), Brandon Graham
Possible Salary Cap Casualties, and/or Candidates to Re-structure: Brent Celek (4.8M savings no dead money), Matt Barkley (500K), Kenjon Barner (500K)
Notes: We expect the Eagles to attempt to jettison some of the fat from their roster in an attempt re-sign Mark Sanchez to a palatable deal.
. . .
New York Giants
Currently an estimated $15M in cap space.
Notable Free Agents: Antrel Rolle, Jason Pierre-Paul, Walter Thurmond, Stevie Brown, Chykie Brown, Larry Donnell, Kevin Oglteree, Jerrell Jernigan
Possible Salary Cap Casualties, and/or Candidates to Re-structure: Could save $17.5M vs Salary Cap by cutting Eli Manning with only $2M in associated dead money, making it a near-certainty the Giants will approach Manning in attempt to re-structure his contract this offseason. In a potential Post-June 1st maneuver, the Giants could save $6.25M against the cap by cutting WR Victor Cruz with only $1.9M in associated dead money, as well as Prince Amukamara who has zero dead money associated with his contract in 2015 and could be cut in a move to clear another $7M of cap space. Peyton Hillis, Juron Criner, and Chris Harper are also also possible cuts to clear another couple of million.
Notes: The Giants will likely have a brand new secondary come September. The majority of their defensive backs are free agents, and Prince Amakamura is a strong candidate to be cut if he doesn’t re-structure. This year’s NFL Draft will be a heavily defensive minded one of the Football Giants, they will have no choice. Rashad Jennings is a near-lock to be back at his $2M salary in 2015, leaving Andre Williams dynasty owners looking towards 2016 barring another Jennings injury.
. . .
Dallas Cowboys
Currently an estimated $7M in cap space.
Notable Free Agents: Dez Bryant, Demarco Murray, Doug Free, Anthony Spencer, Bruce Carter, Rolando McClain, George Selvie, Cole Beasley
Possible Salary Cap Casualties, and/or Candidates to Re-structure: Brandon Carr ($8M savings vs cap) post-June 1st on a 12M figure for 2015; he either re-structures or is out. Henry Melton would constitute a $9M savings if cut, he’s been injury-prone in recent years, and is almost surely gone if he doesn’t do a cheaper deal with Dallas.
Notes: Tony Romo has $37M in dead money associated with his contract in 2015. There is no way he will be cut, but with a $9M savings vs the cap if he were, it’s clear why the chatter has begun about a possible re-structure this offseason. Dallas, once again, will be looking at cornerbacks in the draft. It’s certain to be a defensive-oriented draft for Dallas, while they may look for draft value on the offensive side of the ball at OG and RB.
. . .
Washington Redskins
Currently an estimated 13M in cap space.
Notable Free Agents: Brian Orakpo, Santana Moss, Brandon Meriweather, Ryan Clark, Leonard Hankerson, Roy Helu, Niles Paul
Possible Salary Cap Casualties, and/or Candidates to Re-structure: Trent Williams $12M savings (yet very unlikely), Pierre Garcon $7M savings (post 6/1), Ryan Kerrigan $7M, Logan Paulsen $1.6M, Barry Cofield, and Stephen Bowen $5M each after 6/1, DeAngelo Hall $4M savings after 6/1, Andre Roberts $2.75M post-6/1 with only $1M dead.
Notes: Maybe the only silver lining to the Redskins QB situation is that they only have $8M tied up between all 3 QBs – RG3, Cousins and Colt McCoy for 2015.
