Scouting Notes:

Mannion is your dad’s QB – tall, big armed and immobile. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. Mannion holds the Oregon State school record for TD passes in a season(37), which he amassed on his way to leading the PAC-12 in passing yards in 2014, the year after Brandin Cooks left. Intelligent and able to read defenses prior to snap, he doesn’t often need to be light on his feet as he knows what his opponent has planned schematically and has a defensive player’s mindset as a quarterback which makes you like his intuition. This doesn’t mitigate the fact that he tends to shrink under pocket pressure, which leads to some poorly thrown balls and untimely interceptions. Still, Mannion can make every throw necessary to be successful on the next level, though he’s got an ugly delivery and puts too much air under the ball at times, leading to errant tosses. Mannion failed to stand out at the Senior Bowl during the week of practice among a very mediocre 2015 QB crop, and showed the same issues in practices that are seen on tape – sacrificing touch and accuracy when trying to add velocity.

Fantasy Outlook:

Mannion has his size – he’ll be the tallest QB at the combine – and a history in a pro-style offense to bolster his draft stock. He has all the tools to be an imposing offensive force in the NFL, but we have seen in recent years that mobility is key for QBs, unless your last name is Brady or Manning. Mannion actually reminds me more of Philip Rivers than anyone with his stilted but effective ball delivery. Should he end up on a team with major need at the position, Mannion could end up starting under center very early in his career. For that reason, he’s probably one to take a chance on if you’re looking for talent at QB in your dynasty league, and you miss out on Winston or Mariota.
