Scouting Notes:
Jeremy Langford is a player who Senior Bowl officials told us to keep a close eye on this year in Mobile. Unfortunately, he was a runner that just did not jump out as us in the way that Ameer Abdullah and David Cobb did during the week of practices.
We’ve had a look back at the tape to see if there is anything that we missed. What we found with Jeremy Langford is a very willing pass-protector who doesn’t get much in the run game that isn’t readily available. He’s not overly explosive, elusive, or powerful. Although, he does have the vision and patience to follow his blocks and find the seam in the defense for the chunk plays that are there. He’s just not much of a creator.
On the ground, Langford has the ability to separate from second level defenders. However, we don’t see the long speed to outrun defensive backs that his 40 times suggest. He does have the ability to run between the tackles, but after penetrating the line of scrimmage he likes to bounce runs outside a little bit too much for our taste. Don’t expect too many yards-after-contact at the next level. As a converted wide receiver, Langford is fairly adept in the pass-catching game out of the backfield.
In many ways, Jeremy Langford reminds us a lot of Cameron Artis-Payne. Another Senior Bowl running back that just did not stand out to us this year, even though he had absolutely gaudy college statistics. Like Artis-Payne, Langford had monster yardage and touchdown totals (1522 yd / 22 TDs) in 2014. He also showed the ability to carry the load, logging almost 300 touches.
We have tried hard to like Langford, but have just been unable to get excited. For us, it shows what a step up in competition it is to be on the field against a full slate of NFL caliber defenders.
Fantasy Outlook:
Jeremy Langford is going to be a late-round flier in Dynasty leagues, and a potential spot-play or handcuff in redraft formats over the next few seasons. He’ll likely be selected in April’s NFL Draft as a third-string running back, who will have the opportunity to ascend to the second-string, or a modest change-of-pace role.
