Scouting Notes:

Tre McBride displays the rare combination of size, speed, and technique that you relish seeing in a player coming out of college. The only reason why he probably isn’t considered in the upper echelon of receivers in the upcoming draft is because he played ball at a small school, presumably against lesser competition than many of his Division I counterparts.

McBride put up a 4.41 forty at the combine, which is impressive, but it doesn’t necessarily show up on tape because he’s a such a fluid runner without the kind of explosiveness that you might see in other speedsters. He doesn’t usually beat his defenders to the ball so much as dominate at the point of attack.

He’s able to out-position and leap over coverage with ease, as McBride has great body control for a player of his physical stature. A hands catcher, he can excel in the slot and outside – his power and agility lending to the former and his deceptive speed to the latter. McBride is more than willing to go over the middle, and he’s a solid blocker as well, something that often escapes elegant runners like him. He also prides himself in his better-than-average route running, but McBride could stand to be more decisive in his cuts and more aggressive off of the line.

Fantasy Outlook:

McBride is working his way up to a day 2 spot in the draft. His stellar Combine and Shrine Game performances let the cat out of the bag, and his sterling off-field reputation precedes him. A do-it-all athlete, McBride has the ability to produce in special teams as well as virtually any receiver position on the field, which will give him a chance at being a year-one contributor. His inside-outside prowess and powerful build coupled with speed harkens back to a young Pierre Garcon, who by the way, led the NFL in receptions just two years ago. With a little polish on his route-running, McBride could be a PPR monster for fantasy owners. His keen football mind and graceful athleticism are nearly certain to overshadow a perceived lack of explosiveness on the field.
