RosterWatch Week 13 Fantasy Football Match Up Tool
Alex Dunlap, Rosterwatch.com

Blue= Favorable situation for opposition.
Red= Tough situation for opposition.
This is a tool to help you begin to formulate your Fantasy Football lineup strategy for NFL Week 13.

Opposing QB, RB, WR and TE rankings order the teams based on Average Fantasy output against that team at that position.

As an example, the #1 Opposing Tight End rank means- this team’s defense gives up the most fantasy points in the league to opposing Tight Ends. (standard scoring, non-PPR)
Conversely, #32 has shut down opposing Tight Ends. Same with the other 3 Opposing Position rankings.

Run Defense and Pass Defense rankings are formulated by average total yards allowed per week.

Rankings given here are for 2011 Regular Season only. We feel some of these rankings are historical outliers brought on by unusual circumstances. In these situations, we do not always highlight what “seems” like a good matchup strictly by the numbers alone. Refer to our Week 2 Match Up to view 2010 overall rankings to compare historically.

In order to judge recent performance, we have gone back 5 weeks in order to ensure that each team has a sample size of at least 4 games, given bye weeks.

  1. Alex,

    I find your explanation still a bit confusing, primarily because of the indefinite demonstrative adjectives used. You state:

    “Opposing QB, RB, WR and TE rankings order the teams based on Average Fantasy output against that team at that position.”

    and

    “As an example, the #1 Opposing Tight End rank means- this team’s defense gives up the most fantasy points in the league to opposing Tight Ends. (standard scoring, non-PPR)
    Conversely, #32 has shut down opposing Tight Ends. Same with the other 3 Opposing Position rankings.”

    So when you say “against THAT team at THAT position” or “THIS team’s defense” are you implying that the words “that” and “this” apply to the team on the same line of the ranking?

    IMO your explanation could benefit from an example. To wit, in this Week 13, your first game shows Philadelphia against Seattle, so when I look at the Philly line, I see that the “Opposing QB Rank” cell has QB11 in it, which I guess means that quarterbacks who Philly faced did pretty well. And when on the same line for Philly I see the “5 Most Recent” QBs had a rank of 7 (colored blue) which means those guys did really well against Philly. So overall, I am feeling that playing my QB against Philly might be a pretty good play.

    OTOH, looking at the tight end cells of Philly, they are all colored red, numbering 22 and 20, which tells me that selecting a Seattle tight end against Philly might not be the best choice.

    But then I look at the RB rankings against Philly and it’s a little less clear — because the “Opposing RB Rank” cell is blue, but the “5 Most Recent” cell is red. So in that case I would hope to select a RB for another, less ambiguous, matchup.

    Anyway, these are my thoughts, take ’em as you will. I enjoy your column, reply when you can, I’d like to hear from you.

    Bill Brock (do you remember me?)

    1. hey bill of course!
      i said in reply to the other thread you were my first introduction to fantasy sports, so thank you!

      Next year, this matchup tool is going to be automated and a lot easier to use- its a great tool, though when utilized correctly.

      Basically in looking at the matchup
      For your Philly Question- yes it means they have given up an average number Fantasy points per game against opposing QBs that is the eleventh-highest in the league.
      Sometimes Defenses get better or worse, though. To analyze recent trends, the “5 most recent” shows you how they have been lately.

      When you look at the Philly RB rank with “Blue” RB9 and the “Red” 22 or whatever- that means that Philly has been easy on the runner for THE SEASON, but have really toughened up in the last 5 weeks. (That will not be the case after next week once we input Marshawn Lynch’s stats from Thursday!!!!!)

      The 2011 rank is a historical season-long rank. That is the one that says RB1,2,30,etc. the column directly to the right of those columns shows only avg. FP/game allowed to that position recently- so you can see who has been on the upswing or the downslide against that position.

      Good to hear from you man- tell everyone I said Hi and keep dropping by!
