Scouting Report:

Geno Smith is a pass-first quarterback who possesses a strong arm and sneaky mobility. He’s intelligent and his college statistics suggest an accurate passer who protects the football.

His game film leaves something to be desired, though. Occasionally, Smith makes wildly inaccurate throws and some very dubious decisions. His down-field accuracy was average at best in college.

On the intangible side, Smith is noted for his intelligence and character. While his ability to be a demonstrative leader is in question. Overall, Geno Smith is an intriguing prospect who appears to have significant upside. The Jets got great value in the second round on the best passer in this year’s NFL Draft.

Fantasy Analysis:

Geno Smith is going to play. The question is when, and the answer is sooner than later. Smith will provide stiff competition in training camp to incumbent starter Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will have the inside track to open the season on top of the depth chart due to his experience, but will undoubtedly waiver at some point.

Which is when the Jets fan base will turn on him and the new, skinnier, more benevolent version of Rex Ryan will finally toss his boy Sanchez in the garbage in order to placate his new boss and the fans calling for his job.

The stage will be set for Smith to take over for good at that point.

In redraft leagues, Smith is a late-round flier or free-agent watchlist guy as a possible boom/bust sleeper or backup. The problem is, even if he gets the nod his offensive weapons are anemic. You won’t want to count on him for more than 10 standard fantasy points per game. There is little doubt Smith will be the starter by 2014- so he is a must draft in keeper leagues. For dynasty formats, Smith is clearly the Jets quarterback of the future and can safely be drafted as a 5 yr player w/ upside. Don’t go crazy on him but if the value is there be comfortable in your selection.
