Week 9 RosterWatch Wide Reciever Waiver Report
Byron Lambert, RosterWatch.com
To keep things uniform- we’ll switch it up to an old fashioned article for waiver wire wide receivers this week, too. All players listed below are less than 50% owned.
Marvin Jones, WR Cincinnati Bengals
Where to start on this one. We’ve loved Marvin Jones since scouting and interviewing him the week of the 2012 Senior Bowl. That year, he earned a spot on our All-Senior Bowl Team. His recent performance is not a fluke. The guy is very intelligent with a great work ethic. We’re putting our money on him to continuing growth as an NFL wide receiver. As for fantasy, he should obviously be owned at this point. He’s had three tremendous games in a row, but we worry a small bit about the modest snap numbers as the Bengals are in two-tight-end sets more than any team in the league, and Jones is not currently on the field for those sets. This week at Miami is a more difficult matchup for fantasy wide receivers.
DeAndre Hopkins, WR Houston Texans
Coming off of a bye week, we like him to re-emerge from his hot start in the second half of the season with Case Keenum at QB. Could be really strong WR2/3 pick up. Expect Vontae Davis of the Colts to focus on Andre Johnson, potentially creating a nice matchup for Hopkins this week.
Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Indianapolis Colts
We aren’t infatuated with him following the Reggie Wayne injury. But, he should most certainly be owned. We can see a solid WR3 with upside here. Houston presents a tough fantasy matchup for DHB this week.
Kendall Wright and Nate Washington, WR Tennessee Titans
Both, are terrific waiver plays. We like Wright for a steady 6-11 points- most likely exactly 7. If you are looking for upside, we’d roll with Nasty Nate. He’ll get you 4-5 points and we’ve seen upside for 15+. The Titans have a reasonable matchup against the Rams next on the docket.
Lance Moore and Kenny Stills, WR New Orleans
The concern here is that Moore’s return kills both of their value. The exact opposite was just proven true on Sunday. Drew Brees offers plenty to go around. Conservative fantasy players will gravitate towards Moore who scored just under 10 points on Sunday. He’s a longtime Brees favorite and a reliable veteran. We prefer Kenny Stills, after learning to love him throughout the NFL scouting process. We’ve been enamored with the fit in New Orleans since draft day. Stills has big play ability and it’s hard to ignore the 37 points he’s scored the last two games. Both Stills and Moore, are currently relative desperation plays.
Aaron Dobson, WR New England Patriots
His hands still look like stone, but Brady keeps throwing it to him. We’re aren’t sure if it’s just out of necessity. Hopefully for Dobson, it’s because Brady sees the same potential we saw scouting Dobson at the Senior Bowl. He was one of our favorite sleeper receivers back in April’s NFL Draft. It’s been a roller coaster for the rookie to start the year. Bottom line- he’s getting enough snaps and targets to maintain modest fantasy value. Pittsburgh is a tough matchup for fantasy receivers, but they have been trending somewhat easier over the last month.
Kris Durham, WR Detroit Lions
The Trashman says you can’t trust him. I say bo-log-na. He’s scored 4-9 points five weeks in a row and has been productive ever since entering the Lions lineup. You could do much worse. Stafford clearly trusts him, as evidenced by the huge throw/catch made between the two in crunch time situation on Sunday. A couple of problems- he’s on a bye this week and Nate Burelson is getting closer to a return. Even in the presence of Burleson, it appears Durham has carved his niche. A solid WR4/5 stash.
Dexter McCluster, WR Kansas City Chiefs
Andy Reid is finally making the commitment to him that none of the previous coaches would. He’s not spectacular, but surely has the skills to be productive. The Chiefs offense suits McCluster nicely. He hasn’t completely earned our trust, but 10 targets in Week 8 and a steady 10 average over his last two games is a good place to start. You can’t ask for a better fantasy matchup than Buffalo in Week 9.
Eddie Royal, WR San Diego Chargers
A real up and down season. All in all, better than anyone could have expected. He had a 13 point game against Jacksonville before the Week 8 bye. He gets a great matchup against Washington this week. If you’re going to take a flier on a guy like this, it might as well be when the matchup odds are in your favor.
Rod Streater, WR Oakland Raiders
He’s been anything but spectacular. Yet, he’s rarely ever completely soiled the sheets. Almost always good for 4 points, and sometimes an additional touchdown- we like his matchup at home against the Eagles this week.
Riley Cooper, WR Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles most talented X receiver. In the two games Nick Foles has played a complete game- Cooper has averaged 13 points. If Foles makes it back in the mix this week, Cooper is a very deep desperation play.
Jerricho Cotchery, WR Pittsburgh Steelers
On the season, he will almost always get you 4 points. We’ve seen a 9 point and 16 point game in addition to that. The Patriots are a stiff matchup in Week 9. If you’re desperate he’s worth a look.
Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill, WR New York Jets
At this point, neither is trustworthy. Both manage to stay on the fringe radar, though. This week, New Orleans is a nice matchup for fantasy receivers. Kerley could bounce back to his high single digit way- Hill could finally be due for his occasional big play.
Doug Baldwin, WR Seattle Seahawks
With the breaking news that Sidney Rice is lost to injury for the season, Doug Baldwin makes it back on this list. He was a 7 PPG guy to start the season, we like him to resume that pace with a touch of upside until Percy Harvin returns. Tampa Bay is a becoming a good matchup for fantasy receivers.
Tim Wright, TE/WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In some formats, the Bucs tight end has receiver eligibility. Three of the four games he’s started with Mike Glennon have been flex-worthy. In terms of actual football, Seattle is somewhat susceptible to the tight end. This could be a sneak desperation play in Week 9.
