2014 NFL Free Agency: New York Giants- Potential Cuts and Free Agents
Byron Lambert, Rosterwatch.com
The New York Giants are set for a roster turnover in 2014. Over half the team is going to hit free agency (27 players). The team currently has a projected $12.7M in cap space for maneuvering. After perusing the roster, it’s clear the Giants will be big players in the running back market – likely during the NFL Draft.
Long-time defensive lineman Justin Tuck is likely the most notable player set leave in free agency. Other fantasy relevant names include- Hakeem Nicks (WR), Andre Brown (RB), Peyton Hillis (RB), Brandon Myers (TE), Bear Pascoe (TE), Louis Murphy Sr. (WR).
The final two years of Eli Manning’s contract begin to bring his tenure with the team into question, if it wasn’t already. He’s schedule to hit the cap for $20M in 2014 and 2015. The team would face $7M in dead money in a cut this year, and only about $2M next year. The cap savings for the team is significant either way. However, we’d expect the team to try and renegotiate and extend a new, more cap-friendly deal this offseason. If it doesn’t happen we see Eli getting one more shot this year – and if he stinks it up again he becomes a very likely candidate to be cut after next season. There were prolonged periods of 2013 play where Manning did not resemble anything close to a starting NFL (or even Arena League) quarterback. $40M over two years for this level of play is clearly unacceptable.
Also, Chris Snee’s (OL) impending retirement looks likely to clear $7M in cap space. While, Antrel Rolle (S) may be the player on the defensive side faced with an ultimatum from GM Jerry Reese. $9.25M for most any safety is way too much, the team could save another $7M by lopping an uncooperative Rolle off the roster.
