Rookie Spotlight: Hunter Sharp, WR Philadelphia Eagles
Height: 5’ 11 1/2”
Weight: 198 lbs
Hands: 9 3/8 ’’
Arm: 31 5/8’’
40 yard dash: 4.58 (Combine)
NFL Comparison: Rashad Greene, Jaelen Strong
Scouting Notes: Sharp is an all-around quick moving receiver who looks like a running back at times. Lacking in superior long speed, he uses a fast release off the line and sharp hip swivels to outmaneuver defenders and get position on the ball. The game comes naturally to Sharp which may be why he gives up on plays on occasion, especially throws that seem out of his reach. In close quarters, Sharp is a magician, extending plays when they just aren’t there – he was tops in the nation in 2014 in longest TD plays, and he isn’t a major deep ball threat. His combine stats were less than impressive, but Sharp tends to play faster during the game as he had success all over the field therein. The slot, outside, kick returns, Sharp consistently made plays from wherever he lined up in college, which is why his occasional lack of effort is all the more frustrating. Character concerns are Sharp’s biggest knock. In addition to his lackadaisical attitude, he was suspended in 2015 for two games for undisclosed reasons.
Fantasy Outlook: No one has really taken command over the Eagles WR corps, but Sharp’s relative slowness most likely relegates him to the slot, where Jordan Matthews is most comfortable. Faster and longer, Matthews is not likely to be threatened by Sharp for playing time. Unless Matthews makes that move to the outside, I don’t have much hope for production out of Sharp any time soon. He’s worth owning in super-deep dynasty leagues late, just while we wait for the dust to settle in the Philly WR corps.
