Actionable Fantasy Football Training Camp News By Division

NFL Training camps are in full swing and John Daigle from NBC Sports Edge joined Alex Dunlap on Episode 364 of the RosterWatch Fantasy Football Podcast to break down the most actionable fantasy news from each division! Which WRs are standing out? Which RB should we be worried about? The guys answer those questions and more. Let’s get into it!

AFC South

The Indianapolis Colts have been hampered by injuries this entire offseason.  QB Carson Wentz and Offensive Lineman Quenton Nelson both suffered leg injuries that could keep them out of the early part of the 2021 season.  The Nelson injury has John worried about the fantasy outlook for second-year RB Jonathan Taylor.  He previously had Taylor ranked as his #13 RB and was already taking guys like Joe Mixon & Clyde Edwards-Helaire (CEH) ahead of him in drafts.  The injury to Nelson and Wentz also has moved Nyheim Hines up draft boards as a PPR asset with a lot of short & quick dump offs.

NFC South

John thinks that rookie WR Terrace Marshall could lead the team in touchdowns this season playing out of the slot. He loves the Panthers offense for this season & a bounce back year for Sam Darnold.  At Saints camp it looks like Jameis Winston is leading in the QB battle but the worry is that Taysom Hill will still be used inside the 10 yard line hindering Winston’s fantasy value.  With Michael Thomas most likely to start the season on the PUP list the WR competition to watch is Tre’Quan Smith v Marquez Callaway and John likes the discount on Callaway late in drafts right as he has had a great training camp so far.

AFC North

It’s still very early in training camp season and John isn’t worried too much about the news of the struggles from QB Joe Burrow.  He believes this will still be a team with a high passing volume and sees plenty of targets for all 3 Bengals WRs.  John has been draft a lot of Lamar Jackson this year because of his value but is concerned on Lamar Jackson’s COVID vaccination status because if Lamar was to test positive for COVID during the season, he would miss games if he was unvaccinated.  Lamar has already tested positive twice for COVID during training camp and has missed time.

NFC North

We saw David Montgomery excel down the stretch last season but John sees the addition of Damien Williams to the team as a road black to Montgomery’s fantasy season this year and especially in the passing game.  While some believe AJ Dillon will take on the Jamaal Williams role this season in Green Bay, John is not worried about Dillon being a threat in the passing and the return of Aaron Rodgers has only bumped up Aaron Jones in his RB rankings.  He has Jones as his RB6 now with the return of Rodgers.  He sees Davante Adams seeing double digit targets every game this year and that is the floor you are getting with the stud WR this season.  John loves Adam Thielen because of how successful he was in the redzone and inside the 10 yard line last season.  He is Kirk Cousins favorite target by the end zone.

AFC East

Early reports from the NY Jets camp show that Elijah Moore is THE guy at the WR position.  Hopefully his latest injury is not as serious because John sees Moore making an immediate impact in his rookie campaign and loves him as an 8th/9th round pick.  Alex had both Elijah Moore and Rondale Moore one after the other as NFL prospects at the draft but right now they would both have Elijah because of his clear path to workload.

NFC East

The only actionable news from the NFC East is the health of Amari Cooper and how his price in drafts is now a value.  With the price of CeeDee Lamb becoming too expensive right now, John is buying the dip on Amari Cooper and loves stacking him with Dak Prescott.

AFC West

The biggest competition to watch from this division is at Broncos camp between Drew Lock & Teddy Bridgewater.  For Courtland Sutton‘s fantasy value John is hoping that Bridgewater beats out Lock.  In the 6 games Sutton played with Lock, he was only a Top 38 WR once. Yep, you read that correctly, Top 38!  Although Melvin Gordon is seemingly having a great camp right now, John thinks Javonte Williams will be the starter by the end of the year and is someone to draft with the hopes of a late season surge.

NFC West

With the injury to Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson becomes the RB1 for the Rams but there is worry if he is a workhorse back.  The Rams are going to be a top offense and Henderson could becomes the biggest risk/reward pick.  He is currently RB21 in drafts but if he is given a full workload he could end up as a Top 10 Fantasy RB this season.  The value is there for Henderson right now and John plans on drafting him in a lot of high stakes league in early September.  It seems that Jimmy Garropolo will start at QB for the 49ers but John definitely thinks that Trey Lance will take over sooner than later.  He is pairing Lance with QBs who have an easy schedule to start the year like a Sam Darnold or Kirk Cousins.

12 team full point PPR (defending champ thanks to Roster Watch!) – we get 2 keepers
need help picking 2 out of the 3

Devanta Adams, Calvin Ridley, Darren Waller

    Thanks a ton!

    1. Adams and Ridley!! Love it.

  2. How are we feeling about Parham as a TE2 in a non premium dynasty league? Sounds like he’s in line for a big time role. I’ve got Kittle and Trautman, but I’m souring a little on that hype. Sounds like Juwan Johnson is emerging as the pass catching TE in that offense.

Other TE2 options are I like are Knox and Kmet. Thoughts? And any other TEs you’d recommend?

    1. We always love Parham but we also love McKitty. If you have Kittle and Trautman you are sitting really well. Let me think about the super late guys I’d be interested in.

Hey maniacs – team name Cleveland Steamers – keeper question (1/2 PPR):

No round ramifications, straight up I can keep three. I’m keeping Dalvin Cook and Miles Sanders, but I need a third. Note, QBs get 1 pt for every five yards rushing, compared to 10 yards passing.

    Lamar Jackson
    Cooper Kupp
    Tyler Lockett
    TJ Hockenson

    Thanks a ton!

      I’d keep Lamar!
