As Expected, Toby Gerhart Set to Take On “Workhorse” Duties in Jacksonville
Alex Dunlap, RosterWatch.com
At RosterWatch, we love the situation former Vikings backup and Heisman trophy finalist Toby Gerhart has found himself in. The Jaguars, formerly viewed as nothing more than a running NFL joke, have been transformed into one of the league’s model franchises from a business, new media, and general operations standpoint.
The franchise has a corporate culture of accountability and sticking to the plan. When Gerhart was brought in, the team said he was going to be the main player toting the rock in 2014 with MJD now shipped off to Oakland, and to this point, it seems the organization has – very predictably – stuck by its word.
“Toby will be our workhorse,” Jags offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said to the Jacksonville media Sunday per Jacksonville.com, also adding that backup Jordan Todman will serve in a “change of pace” role.
And, based on ADP data from FF Calculator, fantasy football owners have slowly started catching on, which is not the best news for our beloved and very dysfunctional legions of RosterWatch Nation.
Even with a current ADP of 4.05 (which is much less enticing than the 5th and 6th-round prices Gerhart could be had for prior to May and June), we are still of the belief that Gerhart represents value – and will most certainly be a player we count on drafting a little bit later in redraft leagues with RB1 upside as Gerhart currently ranks as our RB14 for preseason purposes.
We have a feeling that through training camps, Gerhart – a player with fresh, powerful legs, elite blocking ability and supremely underrated and/or forgotten-about hands – will see his ADP continue to rise. Even with this being the case, Gerhart will remain in consideration for us, and hopefully our educated audience in redraft leagues, if value is there to land “the White Rhino” as an RB2. It isn’t the sexiest name, but sexy doesn’t necessarily win in fantasy.
Well, at least not fantasy football.

I have 3 simple questions for the men of roster watch if they would be inclined to answer please. I am not being sarcastic when asking…1) Please explain why Rashard Jennings should be drafted over the likes of Demarco Murray, Andre Ellington, and Zac Stacy according to your cheat sheet?….2) Also according to your cheat sheet why should Toby Gerhart be drafted over backs such as Andre Ellington, Le’Veon Bell, and Zac Stacy?….3) Lastly, as per your latest cheat sheet, which i was inclined to follow while drafting before these questions arose, why do you have the likes of bust Trent Richardson ranked higher than PPR STUD Shane Vereen who is also ranked amazingly lower than players like suspended Ray Rice, not even the named starter Bishop Sankey, ranked too high and splitting carries with his better team mate Joique Bell, etc, etc, etc? I truly would love to draft using your cheat sheet but first would really need to have these questions answered first. Thank you in advance for your response and your hard work. I enjoy listening to you guys on Sirius/XM.

bsmittyfdny- this feels like a bit of an interrogation, but we will answer 🙂
1. Jennings was ELITE with a 16+ point median over the 7 games he started last year
2. He’s a good receiver, Stacy is not- he also outperformed Stacy in his starts significantly last yr
3. Giants will be run heavy, and have had history of some solid fantasy RBs
4. Ellington is a guy we’ve always loved if you’ve followed us over the years, still- he’s unproven in the role everyone is expecting- and is in a crazy tough divsion- may not get all the goal line work. His ADP is even starting to make us uncomfortable, and that scares us because are supporters.
5. We still worry about DeMarco’s durability. It’s also going to be a little bit more of a committee in Dallas this year. We do like the improved offensive line, though. With that defense they may be playing from behind a lot.
6. Tobdy Gerhart is a better player than given credit for, but most importantly VOLUME. He’s set for a huge workload in a pretty easy division, with little competition behind him.
7. We are moving Sankey down and Vereen up in the newest version of the cheat sheet today or tomorrow- we make adjustments throughout the preseason- Vereens stock is up big over the weekend. This cheat sheet is not designed for PPR- however it works very well for it with some minor adjustments such as moving high target WR up the board (Garcon, Kendall Wright, Edelman, etc) AND highlighting RBs such as Vereen, Pierre Thomas, etc.
8. TRich- see Toby Gerhart
9. We think you mean Reggie Bush and Joique Bell- Bush is far more proven than Vereen and still has at least as a big a role with the Lions if not more than Vereen. There is just a higher level of certainty with Bush who also looked electric over the weekend- and far outperformed Vereen last year.
10. Rice is set for a bounce back. Mark it down.
No interrogation brothers. just questions. using your cheat sheet right now. Thanks for the feed back. you have a loyal listener forever now. THANKS!
