It was only a few years ago that Cowboys WR Miles Austin was the toast of the town in Big D. Two straight 1,000+ seasons with 7 or more TDs had put him on map, a terrific feat for an undrafted no-name from Monmouth University who spent his first 3 years languishing in obscurity. He even led the league in receiving one of those years.
Then came the injuries. Hamstring woes—and the emergence of Dez Bryant—began to rub the shine off of Austin. In 2011, he only played 10 games and gathered 579 yards on the year (albeit with 7 TDs). It looked as if his time in the sun was dwindling as the go-to in Dallas. The following season was a marked improvement on that year, 943 yards with 6 TDs, but his hamstrings were still an issue. He lacked the explosion and, at times, looked severely limited.
In 2013, Austin is being regarded in some fantasy leagues as somewhat of a relic of the past. He’s being drafted behind guys like Tavon Austin and T.Y. Hilton, players with bright futures but little of the body of work that Austin brings to the table. Austin should eclipse 1,000 yards this season, even with Bryant and Witten in the mix. They were there last year, and he mostly did it on bad legs. Fully recovered, and with an improved line protecting his QB, Austin should be targeted where he’s falling in these last remaining drafts and bought low in trades before the cat is out of the bag. Let his recent history play to your advantage. He won’t disappoint you.
