Cut Bait or Just Wait: Who to Drop, Who to Keep Week 7 in Fantasy

Trashman 750Each of us has that player on our team that has a big name – or a stellar performance just under the surface – that is keeping them on our rosters. Things change quickly in fantasy though, and the key is to know when to disregard the pedigree and move on to new blood or stick with it for one more week. Here’s my take on what to do with some of the guys who are giving owners fits in fantasy going into Week 7.

…..

Heath Miller TE, Steelers: Miller has had only one game over 5 fantasy points this season. That being said, there aren’t many unowned tight ends worth rostering over him. Unless Clay Harbor is available in your league, you might as well hold onto Miller. With Markus Wheaton continuing to be a disappointment, Big Ben may yet lean on his old friend again. Just Wait

Carlos Hyde RB, 49ers: Hyde has been thoroughly underwhelming considering he’s gotten ten or more carries for the last three weeks. Still, the fact that he’s getting that much action, in critical junctures of games no less, makes him worth holding. He’ll be extremely touchdown-dependent unless Gore gets an injury, though. Just Wait

Greg Jennings WR, Vikings: Is any Vikings receiver worth starting these days? After a serious regression in performance on Teddy Bridgewater’s part in his second start, I’m wondering. Jennings has little upside these days, at least compared to Patterson or Wright, making him expendable in all but the deepest of leagues. Cut Bait

Andrew Hawkins WR, Browns: After starting off the season with consistent game after consistent game, Hawkins has apparently reached the edge of the world, putting up a goose egg in his last contest. It seems that QB Brian Hoyer has found other worthwhile targets in Travis Benjamin and young Taylor Gabriel that can also be endzone targets – a facet lacking in Hawkins’ game. Couple that with the fact that the running game is firing on all cylinders, cutting down the need for a short passing game, plus the return of Jordan Cameron and Hawkins becomes too unreliable to depend on in fantasy. This one hurts. Cut bait

Terrance West RB, Browns: The Browns may have the most depth at running back in the league. Any one of their guys could carry a game on their shoulders, West included. He’s the least impressive of the trio which includes Ben Tate and Isaiah Crowell though, and that left him as a healthy scratch last week. What’s crazy is that Crowell is owned in about half the leagues that West is. Folks, if Tate goes down, it’s Crowell’s backfield. Pick him up. You can drop West. Cut Bait

Allen Hurns WR, Jaguars: In just over a week’s time, Hurns went from being absolutely necessary to an afterthought in the Jaguars passing game. All of their receivers are coming back, and Hurns is most likely to be left out to pasture. He won’t see enough time on the field (on a bad team, no less) to rely on in anything but a reserve capacity. Cut Bait

Hakeem Nicks WR. Colts: T.Y. Hilton and Reggie Wayne are getting all the targets, but it’s Dwayne Allen who is really making Nicks worthless in fantasy as the end-zone target of choice for Andrew Luck. Nicks is a big name, but he’s a small fish in a big Colts pond. You should have done this weeks ago. Cut Bait

Niles Paul TE, Redskins: Paul had a nice run, but Jordan Reed is back and he’s playing well. Paul won’t get enough looks to keep him rosterable. If you’re going to throw a hail mary at tight end, try a player who is going to be on the field most of the game at least. Cut Bait

  1. Have a few trades for you to look at. All PPR. I was sent an offer of Cutler and Rueben Randle for Ryan and Sanu. I don’t really like the sound of that so I was thinking of countering with Ryan and Cooks for Cutler and Randle. I also have another guy that will give me Harvin and McFadden for Roddy White and Monte Ball. Would you do any of these, or just sit tight?

    Current lineup is:
    QB: Ryan
RB:McCoy, Ball, Jennings, Ingram, Antone Smith
WR: White, Jeffrey, Sanu, Holmes, Cooks, Hunter

    1. We don’t think the Cutler deal is horrible with Randle, but in a vacuum, we’d prefer to sit tight with your roster.

  2. What if I could trade Ryan for Cutler straight up?

      1. Thanks guys!

    Donnell, Amaro

Is it too early to grab Rudolph?

    Any recommendations?

    1. I’d probably drop Amaro for Rudolph. I’d trade either Fitz or Gore for a TE1 in any case.
