Dynasty Diagnosis: QB Brandon Weeden

This year’s Senior Bowl is full of big time players who will be making definite impacts on fantasy rosters in the fall. QB Brandon Weeden of the Oklahoma State Cowboys just might be one of them. Here we examine the prospects of his fantasy future.

Pros: Weeden can make  any and every throw required of him at the NFL level. His deep ball is among the best in the draft, and his confidence allows the talented prospect to make the short, tight throws that are difficult to defend. Weeden is 28, so Coach Gundy isn’t the only “man” in the Cowboys’ locker room. We see this as an advantage, as the best quarterbacks in the league, Cam Newton excluded, are in at least their late 20’s. If Weeden can shorten his learning curve, we don’t see why he couldn’t perform at a high level from the get go. His age also benefits his decision making processes on and off the field, or at least one would hope so.

Cons: Weeden’s age could also be a detriment to his NFL prospects, as he probably won’t have as much time before wear and tear affects his performance. In fact he will be 29 before he takes a snap in the NFL. This definitely limits his upside. You’re also not going to seem him running around outside of the pocket much, as he’s a bit of a flat foot.

Fantasy Prognosis: Weeden is going to be a steal for a team wanting to win now; a team that isn’t afraid of his age. The only thing we haven’t seen Weeden do is make the throws required of him with NFL caliber pressure in his face, but that can be said for every quarterback in the draft. His maturity should work in his favor playing a position that favors maturity. If Weeden is thrust into a starting situation next season, we actually like his chances of making fantasy waves early and often.
