Colt Lyerla, Oregon Ducks
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 242 pounds
40 yard dash: 4.61 (Combine)
NFL Comparison: Tyler Eifert
Scouting Notes:
Colt Lyerla has all the necessary tools to be a complete tight end. He has excellent athleticism, as was displayed at the Combine this year, with a 39″ vertical and 10’8” broad jump. These were both tops for tight ends. He also had the third-fastest 40 time for a tight end as well at 4.61. Lyerla doesn’t possess much brute strength though, as his bench press was the worst of the tight end class. A soft-handed and superb straight-line runner, Lyerla knows how to get open and produces after the catch, despite his strength issues. Where those issues do show up is in the blocking game, where he can have difficulties at times matching up against larger defenders.
Fantasy Outlook:
Lyerla looks great on paper, but his off-field issues are a major concern for NFL teams. He’s known for emotional outbursts, he once claimed that parents of Sandy Hook casualties were liars, and he’s been arrested for cocaine use. It’s not certain the he will even be drafted, but someone will ultimately take a chance on Lyerla. Should he find a place on a team with a coach that will be a father-like figure to him, Lyerla could be a beast in fantasy after a year in the league. Only time will tell in this particular case, but we love Lyerla’s upside and current fourth-round value in dynasty rookie drafts. He is the definition of a lottery ticket fantasy prospect that could hit big.
