Scouting Notes: Tall, skinny, and slow for a team’s primary receiver, Lawler somehow managed to be just that for Jared Goff and the Golden Bears during his tenure at California. He has the body awareness and ball-handling skills to make circus catches that would even impress Odell Beckham Jr., though at times he lacks the concentration to bring in balls that are right in his (huge) hands. Where Lawler excels is in the red-zone, where he routinely brings down contested balls. And though Lawler lacks quick acceleration, his long-speed has been decent enough to give him a chance at most deep throws that come his way. That lack of explosiveness could be his undoing in the NFL, though. RW was not impressed with Lawler’s on-field performance at the combine as he ranked 21st overall via our metrics.
Fantasy Outlook: Lawler has “boom-or-bust” written all over him. His ball skills under duress are uncanny, but his lack of focus and pedestrian quicks might keep him from seeing much of the field. In Seattle, where the offense is predicated on the run, Lawler’s best chances of producing are going to come through TDs in what has been a low-volume system (outside of Doug Baldwin’s second-half-of-2015 outburst). TD dependency is a fickle creature anyway, and never one you want to hang your fantasy hat on. Lawler’s a flier at best in dynasty right now. If we’re thinking of rostering anyone connected to Jared Goff’s arm from college, it’s going to be Trevor Davis, not Lawler.
