Fantasy Stock Down: The Denver Running Game Could be a Legitimate Timeshare

I admit, I thought it was purely conjecture when word got out that the Broncos were going to have a RB committee approach this season, but as things turn out, it might actually be the truth. Only two days ago, rookie Montee Ball was elevated to working with the first team, relegating Ronnie Hillman to backup duties, and the fantasy interwebs ignited with claims that Ball was now the lead back in Denver. I mean, he is the most talented back on the team, after all. Nothing makes a fantasy prognosticator’s job easier than a hard decision by a coaching staff to roll with a particular player, so I was more than happy to assume this move would stick. Not so fast.

Ronnie Hillman was back with the first team on Tuesday. Apparently, his demotion was just a punishment for a fumble in Denver’s most recent exhibition game, and we’re back to square one.

Ladies and gentlemen, this an enormous fantasy cluster-fudge.

Who will start Week 1 is anyone’s guess, and coach Fox made clear that both backs would be used throughout the season, hinting at a time share. Nothing could be more frustrating for fantasy owners. Do you draft Ball and hope the cream rises to the top? Or, do you pick up Hillman as a cheaper, value pick (that may be short lived), and hope his blocking abilities give him an edge?

Maybe you draft both of them, and undergo the most exquisite fantasy torture of picking which back to start, then get a Knowshon Moreno wrench thrown in the deal later in the season. There’s really no way to tell what the right move is yet, and it may fluctuate week to week. I hate to say it, but this situation is shaping up as one to avoid.

This is all starting to reak of something we’d see out of a Belichick running game a few years ago, and I don’t like it for fantasy purposes. Patriot Games and Shanahanigans. It seems as though both Hillman and Ball will have value this season, but only time will tell when, and to what extent.

I think moreno might stick better than any of em

    1. byron will tell you he loves him from when mcgahee went down last year. not an athlete at all but takes what defense gives him, falls forward, and plugs in efficiently in high-powered offense when given volume.
