As a high school prospect: 3 star; class of 2019
Pros
– Prototypical size/speed specimen
– Exhilarating acceleration and ability to get up to full speed in a blink
– Reached 22.3 mph vs. Mississippi State at 220-plus pounds; will test very explosively
– Large catch radius with big, sticky hands
– Only two drops in 2023 per PFF
– Can win as a jump-ball player above the rim and as a lid-lifter interchangeably
– Productive both at the X WR and as the big slot, can be a big matchup problem
– 2023 All-SEC second team (coaches)
– 2023 All-SEC first team (PFF)
– 2023 Senior Bowl All-American (first team)
– Second-highest receiving yards total is SC history
Cons
– Late bloomer who burst onto the radar only in his fifth college season
– He’s extremely athletic and tough to bring down, but not a freight train that runs everyone over
– Better straight-line speed than lateral quickness
– 335 of his 1255 receiving yards (27%) and 3 of 7 TDs (43%) came in two games versus Furman and Jacksonville State
Scouting Notes: Legette had the second-most receiving yards in a season for the Gamecocks ever, which is a significant feat considering excellent college players such as Troy Williamson, Deebo Samuel, Bryan Edwards, Kenny McKinley, Sidney Rice, Sterling Sharpe and Alshon Jeffery all preceded him there. He’s a prototypical size/speed specimen who is high-cut with an anvil-like upper body that, when coupled with his incredible speed/size, makes him seem very reminiscent of DK Metcalf physically. Legette’s super-power is his projected truck-stick rating (body-weight X max mph reading) which would simply be off the charts given his body mass index and his elite acceleration ability. He should test explosively across all metrics, but one that we’ll be extra-interested to see will be his ten-yard split. Per PFF, Legette ranked 11th out of 441 FBS qualifiers and second among draft-eligible qualifiers in yards-per-route run during 2023 (3.15), traditionally one of the more predictive analytic metrics in WR prospecting. He played one-third of his snaps from the slot and two-thirds from the X in 2023, so he can profile as a player who has versatility to play at the X as well as the big slot, in a way similar to AJ Brown coming out. Legette has very sure hands, only registering two drops in the 2023 season according to PFF.
Fantasy Outlook: Upside through the roof, but certainly also a few red flags, including being a late bloomer with a late breakout age and only one year of real production. His Senior Bowl and predraft process will greatly impact his dynasty ADP pre-NFL draft, but he’s a guy you could certainly see working his way into the Round 2 discussion in traditional non-superflex 12-team setups with success through the process.
