RosterWatch Week 14 Waiver Wire: RBs

It’s the end of the season and the running back well has dried. If you are lucky enough to have somehow made the playoffs with such a motley team that you’re thirsty for one of these scrubs- then, cheers to you, and I suggest taking a sip from these remnants. Trust me- I really hope you don’t get sick.

*All players listed below are less than 50% owned across standard leagues

Donald Brown, RB Indianapolis Colts- 44% owned
We seriously cannot believe we will be writing about him in this article all the way until the end of the season. How is he not 50% owned?! He’s a starting NFL running back on an offense, who albeit has struggled lately, is very capable of moving the ball. However, Brown is a player we consider very matchup based. Three of his last four games have been double digit performances, but two of those were against Tennessee and one was against St. Louis. All of which are dream matchups. This week at Cincinnati is a fantasy nightmare. If you are looking to play it safe in the playoffs- Brown is a decent choice because, at least, you know he is going to play.

LeGarrette Blount, RB New England Patriots- 7% owned
Last Saturday night on the Sirius/XM show, we told you that in the absence of Stevan Ridley- it was LeGarrette Blount that we liked. His role is clear, and it’s a good role to have in the Patriots offense. Ask anybody who has owned Stevan Ridley in 2012 or over the last six weeks. Like The Trashman told you earlier this season, “Bill Belichik doesn’t need Stevan Ridley to win”. We aren’t expecting Ridley back anytime soon, which bodes very well for LaGarrette Blount. Matchups moving forward do not concern us here either. The Pats get the Browns at home in Week 14. Sounds like a game that could end with a lot of trash time for Blount.

Bilal Powell, RB New York Jets- 42% owned
The timeshare in New York is never going away this season. Chris Ivory may still be the slightly preferred “own” but Bilal Powell is basically every bit as valuable. Neither is all that appealing of a play, but if owners are playing Ivory- Powell can be played too. It’s actually a decent set-up for both with Oakland flying cross country to New York. This is after giving up fantasy monsters to Demarco Murray and Lance Dunbar of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

Mike Tolbert, RB Carolina Panthers- 30% owned
Sometimes you just say to yourself, “who has the best chance of scoring a touchdown?” If that’s your type of logic, then Tolbert is your man. He’s always got a pretty good chance to do so. Of course, if he doesn’t, you will be left with two points in your flex. Such is life in the swindle we call fantasy football. The Panthers are at New Orleans this week. The Saints aren’t the most favorable matchup for fantasy running backs, but they have been trending easier. Don’t be shocked to see the Panthers attempt to put some power football on the Saints in Week 14.

Mike Gillislee, RB Miami Dolphins- 0% owned
In our June Rookie Spotlight series, we explained why Mike Gillislee was such an underrated rookie running back talent. His sexy girlfriend’s beach bombs are also worth a look too, in that article. Either way, we like him as a runner in Miami. Lamar Miller has done anything but seal the deal, and clearly the team is committed to committee. Daniel Thomas sucks, and is injured. Do not be shocked to see Gillislee get legitimate action in the fantasy playoffs. He’s worth a look if you are desperate.

Willis McGahee, RB Cleveland Browns- 13% owned
We suspected he would be fantasy garbage, after the Trent Richardson trade (speaking of fantasy garbage). It looked like he was completely done the last few weeks with former Longhorns Chris Ogbonnoya and Fozzy whitaker getting their crack at the job. Some things never change, though. Each of them proved very quickly they are still the JAGS they always were and always will be. Back entered Willis in Week 13 to lead the backfield in touches and get the goal line opportunities. Thirteen fantasy points later, everyone was wondering if they were in the twilight zone. We personally hate McGahee, and would rather play a fresh sack of dog turds over him in our RB or Flex position. But, can understand it if you decide to roll the dice with him technically being a “starting NFL running back”

Antone Smith, RB Atlanta Falcons- 0% owned
Willis McGahee is such a turd, we’d even consider rolling out an Antone Smith over him. It’s tough to recommend to our followers since he gets so few touches, but we just like him more. When every other outlet told you to jump ship on Smith, we told you last week we liked him as a joker heading into the playoffs on teams with deep benches and winning records. That if you could hold him for a week to see what happens, you might be enticed to consider him for monster playoff matchups against Green Bay and Washington. We also mentioned we like players like Smith on struggling teams whose seasons are over. Check mark- Atlanta Falcons. The dividends were paid out quickly with ten points in Week 13. His last three games are: 15, 1, 10. You get the idea.

Got a great laugh out of the McGahee turd bag reference. Nicely done.
