Senior Bowl Spotlight: DeAndre Washington, RB Texas Tech University

DeAndre Washington, WR Texas Tech University
Height: 5’7 7/8”
Weight: 197 lbs
40 yard dash: 4.56 (unofficial)
NFL Comparison: Ameer Abdullah, Darren Sproles

Scouting Notes: Washington is coming out of Texas Tech with back to back 1,000+ seasons under his belt, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished there in almost 20 years. You may take that fact with a grain of salt as Tech is notorious for living and dying under the passing game, but it’s worth noting nonetheless. Washington was extremely productive for a smaller back, finishing 2015 in the top-20 in a number of categories including all-purpose yards (No. 14, 146.6) , rushing touchdowns (No. 17), yards per carry (No. 14), rushing yards (No. 12) and rushing yards per game (No. 13). He’s also particularly effective in the passing game, or any situation in which he can get into open space, due to his impeccable vision.

Washington isn’t the fastest guy, which is usually an important trait for smallish backs to have, but his shiftiness, coupled with that aforementioned vision goes a long way for him. He also has a knack for breaking tackles without losing much steam. His all around effectiveness and unimposing size reminds me of Ameer Abdullah, though Abdullah’s being good but not great between the tackles and in the passing game made him a luxury with guys like Joique Bell and Theo Riddick on the roster.

At the Senior Bowl, Washington shined during the week of practice in pass-protection, always giving max effort and keeping his eyes up while looking for work. This was the exact opposite of how fellow South team RB Kenyon Drake handled RB vs. LB pass-pro drills as the worst and most uninterested pass-protector we have ever seen in our entire lives. Washington will have a chance to contribute early as a passing-down option in the right attack, and we love the way he goes about his business as a player. We don’t expect any sort of immediate fantasy impact in 2016, but he’ll be a good, solid player for one NFL team who’ll be able to contribute on special teams if unable to get on the field early for third-down opportunities on offense.
