Stacking Strategies in 2021 Best Ball Drafts
During the RosterWatch Podcast (#349), Alex Dunlap was joined by Davis Mattek from the Swolecast and SportsGrid to discuss the strategy of stacking in best ball drafts. Which stack should you target? Who can you grab late? Let’s dive right in!
With best ball draft season in full swing, there are a lot of strategies you can employ and one of them is stacking. Stacking is when you pair up a quarterback with a WR and/or TE from the same team so when they connect on a TD together you double your point total from that score.
Here are some of the stacks that Davis has seen going in drafts right now: Patrick Mahomes w/ Mecole Hardman
Lamar Jackson w/ Marquise Brown
Dak Prescott w/ CeeDee Lamb
Davis likes Mecole Hardman for the 2021 season and believes he could see between 90 to 110 targets this year.
Davis believes that grabbing at least one stack in best ball tournaments is vital and you should look to get two. The three stacks listed above could turn out to be expensive so it’s important to try and target a stack you can grab later in drafts. He says its been difficult because QB2’s are rising up boards and especially those with rushing abilities like Jalen Hurts, Trey Lance and even Trevor Lawrence.
One of value stacks you can grab late is the New York Giants stack. Since Daniel Jones and his pass catchers are going very late in drafts, Davis has seen himself grabbing Jones with either Sterling Shephard, Darius Slayton or Kadarius Toney at the tail end of his drafts as a secondary stack.
A risk/reward stack the guys talked about was with the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers is slipping in drafts due to his uncertainty of returning to the team so he is a QB that you can pair with rookie Amari Rodgers at the very end of drafts right now. The guys like this as a great second stack to pair with a top tier stack. If Aaron Rodgers returns to the Packers, Alex and Davis are bullish on Amari Rodgers since his skill set is similar to Randall Cobb and James Jones who both had a lot of success playing in Green Bay.
One of the biggest questions amongst rookie QBs is when Justin Fields, Trey Lance and Mac Jones will make their first start. Davis thinks that Lance will start Week 1 and before the other two and believes Jimmy Garoppolo will be on a new team before the season starts. He doesn’t like the Week 1 matchup for the Bears playing the Rams and thinks they won’t trot out Fields against one of the best defenses in the league.
As the summer rolls along we will see more value stacks open up for our best ball leagues & we’ll get into stacking in our re-draft leagues as well!
