Trashman’s Garbage Grab Bag: Week 3

Trashman’s Garbage Grab Bag: Week 3

It’s week 3 and chances are you’ve been affected by the onslaught of injuries that has stricken the league over the past two weeks – I know I have. But fear not, I’ve compiled a short list of lesser owned players who can be used this week and hopefully beyond. Happy dumpster diving my friends…

Running Back

Darwin Thompson, Chiefs: Thompson steps into the no.2 role this week with Damien Williams sidelined with a knee injury. Thompson is undersized, but he had an eyebrow raising 5.07 yards after contact average in college, and will split snaps with Shady McCoy and Darrell Williams. Williams could vulture some goal line action, but Thompson should see enough work and has enough upside to warrant flex consideration.

Ito Smith, Falcons: Smith has outgained Devonta Freeman each of the past two weeks, though neither back has scorched the field. Freeman is still top dog, but Smith has earned more touches, and he gets the Colts this week, a team that has performed poorly against the run the past two weeks. Even if you don’t use him this week, he’s someone to position at the end of your bench.

Rex Burkhead, Patriots: I like Burkhead this week mainly because the Pats like to use him in blowouts, and this week is shaping up to be no different, as they will face a Jets team minus their starting QB in New England.

Jeff Wilson, 49ers: Wilson scored twice last week on ten carries as the third back in rotation for the 49ers. The important thing to note here is that he seems to be the de facto goal line back. That, in addition to potential double-digit touches, makes Wilson worth flexing against a – so far –  soft Steelers front.

Wide Receiver

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside/Mack Hollins: These guys become more viable if Alshon Jeffery sits, but with DeSean Jackson already out and a strong chance that Jeffery is going to be a glorified decoy should he play, they’re both reasonable DFS plays with Whiteside being the higher upside play. With Jeffery’s injury history, it’s probably a good idea to own him anyway in deeper leagues.

Deebo Samuel, 49ers: Samuel is the “no.1” WR in San Fran right now, despite Dante Pettis returning to the field. He should have an easy time getting open against a Steelers secondary that’s been getting torched.

Devin Smith, Cowboys: Smith gets a chance to start this week with Michael Gallup sidelined due to a meniscus tear. Smith went big last week(74 yards, 1 TD) with Gallup in the game, so it looks like the Cowboys were trying to get him more involved anyways. He should have no trouble breaking through Miami’s tanking defense, especially when their best defender will be on Amari Cooper most of the game.

Preston Williams, Dolphins: Miami is going to have to air it out to have a chance against the Cowboys, and Williams has been their best bet through the air over the first two games of the season. He’s a longshot, but his floor has been pretty high thus far.

Damiere Byrd, Cardinals: Byrd is working as the no.3 option in Arizona to the surprise of many. He’s had 7 targets in each of the first two games of the season, and though he hasn’t broken any big plays, he’s proven to be an asset PPR formats.

Tight End

Vernon Davis, Redskins: Davis is making another start with Jordan Reed once again sidelined due to a concussion, it seems if the Bears are susceptible anywhere so far, it’s against tight ends. He’ll probably need a TD to make a dent, but there’s solid chance he gets one.

Gerald Everett, Rams: Everett is making the start with Tyler Higbee sitting due to a chest injury. He’s an impressive athlete who immediately steps in as a red-zone threat. That can be said about every other starting pass catcher for the Rams, but Everett makes for an intriguing streamer if you’re in a pinch, especially since the Browns starting safety is out.

Quarterback

Jacoby Brissett, Colts: Brissett has had at least 20 fantasy points in both of his games this season, and those were away games. Brissett gets a faltering Atlanta at home this week, and he may have to depend even more on his arm with Marlon Mack playing hurt.

  1. Freeman owner. Should I look to acquire Ito Smith. Have a trade offered to me where I send Miles Sanders and receive Smith straight up. PPR

    1. I think Sanders is a better talent than Smith who will rise to the top of the depth chart eventually. Smith has more standalone value than is a pure handcuff. If you do add him, eventually you’ll be deciding whether to start him or Freeman on any given Sunday which would be a headache.

    16 Tm .5ppr.
TE question with Henry in IR slot,
Currently have Dissly do you him over Everett? I’m also starting Robert Woods and Lockett in the flex. Thanks

    1. Check the snap counts / touches targets and matchup tool

this is a total trashman question

    2. I think Everett has the higher floor and is an overall safer play

      1. Post By Show Me Your TDs

        Awesome thank you!

  3. Need 3 breida, Emmanuel Sanders, adam thielen , Mixon ppr

    1. Mixon + Thielen

Decide b/t Breida and Sanders using the system I described in detail, below for another user asking about flex (the gordon vs breida diatribe)

  4. Half ppr pick 1. Jacobs, Miles Sanders, or Darwin?

    1. It’s Jacobs or Darwin— and Jacobs is probably the “safe play” and Darwin the “upside play”

If it’s my team— I prob roll Jacobs. Good question- just updated the RB rankings a smidge. Good luck.

  5. Nice stuff Trashman. Picked up Deebo.

Got 2 questions for RW Nation…

    1. Who to Flex? Josh Jacobs (concerned about his usage and him being sick most of the week), DJ Moore, or Deebo. Leaning Deebo for the matchup.

    2. Need 1 RB. Josh Jacobs or Mostert

    3. Who to Flex? Mecole or Mike Williams?

    1. This should say nice “puff” piece Trashman—lol. Serious I would add also Yeldon to this list if I was a super disgusting trashman

I’d say go w/ Rankings on Moore vs Deebo—- but we obv big Deebo fans for a long time- trashman likes him– so if you want to roll him out– no problems here.

      2. Go with the rankings, a lot goes into those!

  6. Meant 3 questions … And thank you everyone

  7. PPR 2 flex league, which 2 should I start?

    Mixon
    Breida
Josh Gordon (I also have Edelman)
    David Montgomery

    1. 1. Use the RB rankings to choose the first RB

      2. Use the RB rankings to see who the RB2 on this list is, and compare them to Gordon

      3. Reference Trashman’s Flex Rankings, The Matchup Tool, Snap Counts / Targets / Touches, and the Vegas Game Total / Game Flow, and Vegas Flex Value tool to help split the hairs on the flex.

      So using that system-

      RB1 = Mixon

      Flex = Breida vs Gordon

      Matchup – Gordon
Vegas Flex Value (absolute value)- Gordon

Vegas Game Total / Game Flow- Brieda
      Trashman Flex Ranks- Brieda

      Snap Counts,Touches, Targets = Draw

So this one is down to the absolute wire—-I probably default to the matchup and Tom Brady and go JGordon instead of a 3 headed RB committee w/ Wilson as the “goal line” back. Great options all around.

  10. 12 team Standard I’m 1-1, do I start Qb Wentz or Winston?

    1. Go with the rankings!
