Notes:
This is where some surprise picks start coming into the fold. Even if Geno Smith is available, the Jets won’t take him because they don’t want another QB circus. Rex Ryan is a defensive guy, so the front seven is always in play. There will be some desirable players available. Possibly OLB Dion Jordan, OLB Jarvis Jones, or DT Star Lotulelei. With the departure of Laron Landry and a couple of no names on the roster, the team could target a few safeties in this draft. Namely, Kenny Vaccaro to start. The offense desperately needs weapons if Mark Sanchez has any shot at redemption. Eddie Lacy and Tyler Eifert are in play.
The Pick:
The reality is, the Jets will be losing Revis soon and they have to cover everybody from Gronk to Hernandez to Amendola to Dustin Keller and Mike Wallace in Miami. As Rex Ryan always says, the fastest way to lose is if you can’t cover. He loves the development he’s seen in 2012 1st round selection, DE Quinton Coples, and decides against loading up in the front seven in Round One again this year.
Allocating his resources evenly across the defense, Rex tells GM John Idzik he wants Kenny Vaccaro, a player he believes can be used in an almost limitless number of ways – coverage, run support, center field, pass rush, etc..
(The surprise is either Lacy or Eifert, but the club probably feels it can get a good compliment to Goodson later and may hope they can land Ertz as a better value in the 2nd round than Eifert in the 1st.)
