Will Charles Clay Break the Mold?
Cashing in on Clay

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have confirmed they have a “dangerous weapon” in second year H-back Charles Clay. The highest drafted fullback of last years draft has been making believers out of Miami’s staff and players alike. The Dolphins traded up in the 6th round of the 2011 draft to acquire Clay, and they made decent use of him for a rookie fullback. Clay finished the year with three touchdowns on 16 receptions. That’s right, receptions. Clay didn’t have one rushing attempt last season which makes his fullback assignation misleading. Clay usually lines up at tight end, and has even been playing wide receiver on occasion in OTAs. This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering Miami’s dearth of noteworthy receivers.
So Clay is a playmaker in practice, but will that necessarily translate to fantasy value? Quarterback Matt Moore has found a favorite target in him in the off-season, but it is yet to be seen if Moore will even be the starter as veteran David Garrard is laying claim to to that position. Either way, I don’t know that Clay will have enough weekly value to warrant starting at tight end or running back in fantasy leagues. Only if he gets receiver eligibility, would I roster him. He should be fun to watch this season though, and he might eventually be worth a pickup as a tight end if Miami’s receiver situation becomes exceptionally dire.
