NFL Comparison: Brandin Cooks

Scouting Notes:

Phillip Dorsett claims his playing style is a mixture of TY Hilton, DeSean Jackson, Santana Moss, and Antonio Brown. Clearly, he’s not lacking for confidence. We tend to think of him more as this year’s version of Brandin Cooks. Either way, Dorsett is absolutely a round-one caliber talent. If he falls to the second round as many pundits predict, it will be an absolute coup for the franchise that nabs him.

Our scouting remarks from the Senior Bowl about Dorsett were outstanding:

“Phillip Dorsett, WR University of Miami
Brandin Cooks 2.0, ladies and gentlemen. Dorsett is an electric player in space, and has good strength for his size. His ability to separate is uncanny (not just vertically, but over the middle and on slant and crossing routes) and his hands are reliable. He can beat you deep, he can take a short pass the distance, and he can beat you in the red zone. Watch out for Phillip Dorsett, RosterWatch Nation. Once he blows up the combine with what will be one of the fastest times among all participants in the 40-yard dash, the secret will be out.”

The observations we charted during on-field drills at the NFL Combine were no less impressive, as Dorsett put on arguably the best performance of all receivers who participated. Of course, the former Hurricane put a night cap on everything at his pro day, posting a 4.25 40 yard dash, improving his broad jump by seven inches, and catching everything in sight.

Fantasy Outlook:

Phillip Dorsett will be a priority first-round pick in all Dynasty rookie drafts. In redraft leagues, he’ll be a mid-to-late round commodity; well worth the risk. We’d love to draft him as a WR5 with upside in traditional redraft. Chances are once the hype hits a crescendo in training camp, you may have to draft him even earlier. We called for the post-combine hype and we are just as sure he will make a big splash when he lands in his NFL city.
