The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hold the 7th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, and wide receiver is clearly a concern. Mike Williams—whose contract was extended last Summer by the previous Bucs regime to the tune of $40 million over six years—is busy going to arraignments and rapping with his music project, The Cave Man Gang, while not rehabbing his torn hamstring. It’s not the Bucs’ biggest need, but Watkins would be a true weapon for second-year QB Mike Glennon in the NFC South opposite Vincent Jackson.
The good news is that Williams’ contract with the Bucs was extremely front-loaded and he got his guaranteed bucks in 2013. In 2014, Williams is only on the books for $1.8 million of which $1.2 million is dead. If the Bucs were to select Watkins, it would give the clear indication that they have no interest in paying Mike Williams the $6.8 million he will be due in 2015 with not a penny of dead money associated. The cap hits associated with Williams only go up from there through 2018, culminating with a $8.75 million payday.
