2024 NFL Training Camp Tour – Washington Commanders

On Monday, I stopped by Washington Commanders Training Camp for Stop No. 7 of the @RosterWatch Training Camp Tour. For more updates regarding the RosterWatch Training Camp tour, make sure to Follow RosterWatch on all social media platforms.
So far in 2024, the RosterWatch staff has attended the Rams, Raiders, Cowboys, Bears, Patriots, Giants, and now Commanders Training Camps in 2024 with many more on the docket in the days to come.

Here are my Top 10 Thoughts from the day

  1. Three WR sets featured Terry McLaurin, Dyami Brown, and Jahan Dotson playing out of the slot.
  2. The RB1 is still clearly Brian Robinson (who seems to have slimmed up a bit and looks much smoother working out of the backfield in the receiving game)
  3. Behind Robinson, Ekeler worked in what felt like a little more than every third snap. His role wasn’t receiving centric, but rather balanced. Observed Ekeler take three different handoffs to the inside and utilize very sharp vision to create space and find the hole behind the Commander’s OL.
  4. Ready for this one? Jeremy McNichols projects to be the RB3 on this team, ahead of 2nd-year back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and Rookie Michael Wiley. However, McNichols was in a red non-contact jersey on Monday.
  5. Ben Sinnott is a clear standout, and someone they want to involve, however – if an alien dropped down yesterday (essentially me) and watched that practice with no prior opinion, they could be sold on Zach Ertz being labeled the “leader” of the Offense, FWIW. He was the most vocal, led by example in drills, and was the starting Tight End in line while bumping out as well.
  6. Defensively, the acquisition of Bobby Wagner, Jeremy Chinn, and Michael Davis was known throughout free agency. However… It’s hard not to notice the #4 jersey flying around the field, that’s Frankie Luvu, who finished with 236 tackles over the last two seasons in Carolina. It might be a hotter take to call him the defensive leader, but he 100% brings that needed energy and would be my bet for leading tackler, ahead of Wagner.
  7. Former No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Clelin Ferrell looks reinvigorated at his new home. Ferrell was working with the first team defensive line as the Left End, with DaRon Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Dorance Armstrong.
  8. Wide Receiver Depth? Olamide Zaccheaus… Mitchell Tinsley… Jamison Crowder… Luke McCaffrey would be the next 4 receivers IMO. Though 2nd-year UDFA, Kazmeir Allen profiles as a great Practice Squad Stash.
  9. Dyami Brown mentioned that he has caught 500 footballs “every day” since February… “EVERY DAY”, he was adamant about that!
  10. The Biggest Takeaway of the Afternoon: Jayden Daniels… simply wow! Kliff Kingsbury is working closely with Daniels and co. – Before team practice began, I clocked more than 40 minutes of QB-centric drilling with Daniels, Mariota, and Jeff Driskell. Kingsbury and staff were with this group the whole time, while the rest of the team stretched and warmed up/drilled.

Thanks for all the work in this space. What’s the feeling on Dotson right now? I have him on my bench in a PPR league. Am I better off keeping him or dropping him and using the bench spot for a WR rookie such as Mitchell, Burton or McMillan?
