Everyone knows a large part of being successful in fantasy drafts is knowing how to realize value when you see it, and act on it. Why pick up a Romo when you can pick up Eli a little later? Why reach on Fitzgerald when Steve Smith will be available come next round? Why spend a high draft pick on Rob Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham, when a perfectly good Fred Davis will be around much later in the draft?

Yeah, you heard me right. The fifth year Redskin is poised to have a huge year with the help of shiny new QB Robert Griffin III, and you should be able to reap the benefits at a pretty low risk. Last season, only Gronk and Graham had a higher avg. yds. per catch than Davis who averaged almost 14 yards on 59 receptions. And that was accomplished with pretty bogus quarterback play. If Griffin is even remotely the player most think he is, Davis will be a focal point of what should be an electric offense, and stands to finally take his place as one of the elite tight ends in the league. He was, after all, a John Mackey recipient at USC (This means he was the nation’s top tight end.)

A rangy player who often lines up wide, Davis was suspended for the last four games of the 2011 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Which brings the only concern that I have with him, which is that another infraction could bring a long suspension. That in mind, there isn’t a better value at tight end going. Right now most mocks have him as the 8th TE off the board. He easily has top 5 upside. So if you miss on Gronk, Graham, or Gates, or simply have other players atop your priority list, don’t sweat it as Davis should end up serving you almost as well if not better. Just hope he doesn’t get too stressed.
