While a certain Northeastern tight end’s career is daily spiraling ever downward, another tight end across the country has his arrow pointing due north this preseason. Arizona’s Rob Housler, in his third year of NFL play, is drawing comparisons to Aaron Hernandez and other athletic tight ends with his impressive performances during OTAs.
Described as “a wide receiver playing tight end” by new head coach Bruce Arians, he has a 4.55 40-time at 6’5″, 250 pounds, and Housler has a shot to make a significant impact for the Cardinals this season. Arians loves to air it out, and though he is not known for involving his tight ends to a great extent, Housler could very well end up a prime beneficiary.
So why now? Housler has been on the Cardinals for 2 years and has never even scored a touchdown. A 45-catch campaign last year is trending in the right direction, but some might say he’s had a chance to show us what he’s got. The main hindrance to his success has been the lack of competent quarterback play in Arizona, of course. The play at the position has provided little more than a gag reel over the last two seasons. You know something is awry when Larry Fitzgerald is avoided like the plague in fantasy leagues. Hopefully, veteran signal caller Carson Palmer can change all that in his new role as Cardinals quarterback. His play will serve as the catalyst or detriment to Housler’s development as the tight end of the future for Arizona. Housler could flirt with TE1 numbers this year, if all goes as planned.
