Scouting Notes: It’s hard to make much of an impression playing behind the likes of DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, and Martavis Bryant, and that’s probably why you haven’t heard much about Charone Peake up until this draft season, despite him being a considerable talent — well that and two significant knee injuries early in his career. Peake didn’t have a full season until his final year at Clemson, during which he had 50 receptions for 716 yds and 5 TDs. A prototypical WR1 prospect, Peake has the size and speed to be a dominant player in the NFL. He’s a polished route-runner who can play at all 3 levels on the field, and he does a decent job blocking downfield when he commits to doing so. Peake is a deep threat, that is certain, but he’s also adroit at creating space between himself and his defenders in close quarters. His excellent body control helps in those situations as well, allowing him to adjust to the ball in a pinch.

Peake’s outright weaknesses are few. He has small hands for his size, and he occasionally slows down to adjust to the deep ball. He could stand to be more aggressive on the field as well — he doesn’t always play up to his size. His greatest obstacle is and will be his auspicious injury history. Also, Peake failed to separate much from the field in Senior Bowl practices during a year that, while sneakily strong, was not really billed as such. Peake showed a few issues with drops and concentration lapses.

Fantasy Outlook: Peake’s obvious intangibles and consistent work ethic will get him some long looks, despite his troublesome knees. I’ll be surprised if he lasts longer than the 3rd round. Getting him on an NFL team won’t be a problem, but making him a productive player is another story. Peake has never played up to his potential — he was a national top 15 player coming out of highschool — and that could follow him into the next level. Peake has a bright future if he can stay healthy though, and he’s worth a flier in dynasty leagues as a player with WR1 potential. As with most players, Peake’s value will largely be tied to the situation he falls to.
