Scouting Report:
Devin Smith exemplifies this year’s draft class of wide receivers. A marvelous prospect who isn’t even a lock to be a Top 10 pick at his position. We’d have no qualms spending a second-round pick on him. But, it’s a deep and talented class of pass catchers, so Smith could end up being a real steal.
Here was our take after a week of live scouting him at the Senior Bowl:
“Coming immediately off of a National Championship victory, Smith came to Mobile and worked hard all week, which is notable as many players on the Ohio State and Oregon rosters elected to rest following two weeks of bowl practices and not come compete. He has infinite speed and reliable hands. All concerns about being a one-trick pony vertical threat were completely erased, as Smith dominated in the short and intermediate passing game showing polish as a route runner. Devin Smith has huge-play ability, and will be very difficult to cover in the NFL.”
Smith confirmed his athleticism at the NFL Combine in February, and by all accounts fared respectably at Ohio State Pro Day in March. The God Father of scouting, Gil Brandt, noted that Smith had a tendency to body-catch during the workout. Admittedly, it’s something that we did also note during on-field drills in Indy, which tends to concern us. It makes us more comfortable that he snatched the ball with his hands well on numerous occasions during the week of Senior Bowl practices in Mobile.
While Smith may not be an elite prospect, he is certainly a very good one. Ideally, he’ll be drafted to come in as a WR3, with WR2 upside. If he ends up somewhere like Philly, his ceiling may eventually be even higher.
Fantasy Outlook:
Devin Smith is an excellent dynasty prospect. He’ll likely be a late-second-round pick in rookie drafts. Likewise, Smith will immediately be a late round commodity in deep 2015 redraft leagues. He should also be on all waiver wire watch lists in fantasy leagues where he goes undrafted.
