Scouting Report:

Two of the NFL player comparisons we had for Gavin Escobar during our NFL Draft preparations- were Martellus Bennett and Jason Witten. Ironically, now Escobar is a Cowboy.

The dog continues to chase its tail. Gavin Escobar is basically the replacement for Martellus Bennett (who was also a second-round Cowboys pick.)

The selection was considered a reach by the NFL community. On the heels of doing this same research on Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz, Jerry Jones may have actually gotten decent value. Ertz and Eifert are very impressive, but when you go right behind them and watch Escobar- he’s pretty good too. The main difference on tape being the ability to run. Still, Escobar tested very well in agility drills at the NFL Combine.

Escobar is a big target who catches with his hands. He is currently a liability as a pass blocker (we give Bennett credit for being very good in that department.)

Fantasy Analysis:

The Cowboys destroyed Martellus Bennett’s value not only as a fantasy commodity but also as an NFL player. Maybe they learned their lesson. Maybe they didn’t. Escobar’s snap count will be critical to his fantasy relevance. His blocking could keep him off the field.

While the team’s insufficient depth at wide receiver may necessitate more two-tight end sets, the situation will be fluid. We aren’t expecting much this season out of Escobar, but there is an outside chance he becomes a potential spot-play a couple times this year. We like Escobar a bit more in Keeper and Dynasty formats.
