Monday Fantasy Football Fallout: Week 1
Don’t go too crazy trying to read the tea leaves from Sunday. Teams are still figuring out the kinks, and players are still getting warm. That being said…
-What a difference a healthy Julio Jones and Roddy White make. Matt Ryan is playing on an elite level with his two favorite toys running with full batteries this season, and with his pass-catching backs looking much more effective than a dead-legged Steven Jackson, we could see a resurgence of epic proportions. Kudos to those who took a chance on Ryan in drafts.
– A Levine Toilolo sighting! Don’t go crazy in believing he’s the next Tony Gonzalez, but it wasn’t a bad start.
– Speaking of comebacks, is that really Devin Hester who racked up almost 100 yards yesterday with 5 catches? When the RosterWatch snap count tool comes out later today, it will show he had seven targets. It’s too early to say he’s worth starting, as we’ve seen this out of Hester in the beginning of other seasons, but he’s definitely one to watch or maybe even roster in deep leagues.
– Brandin Cooks is who we thought he was and more. He’s the TRUTH and the new mini-tron. Cooks is an early front runner for offensive ROY honors along with Kelvin Benjamin.
– The Saints running game is a three-headed beast, and all three heads could be started in your flex on any given week. Mark Ingram did have a concerning snap count at 27%, but he paid off, at least in Week 1.
– A.J. Green’s late-game TD haul is the reason you drafted him. He can rain down fantasy destruction at any moment.
– Don’t go dropping Jeremy Hill just yet. The Bengals played out of the shotgun most of the game for strategic purposes, leaving Hill out of the mix. He’ll have much better days ahead.
– It’s Justin Forsett, not Bernard Pierce or rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro, who took lead back duties with Ray Rice out. RosterWatch has scouted Taliaferro live, and although he flashed some as a Senior Bowl late-add in the passing game, he was a very uninspiring runner, failing to really to stand out against even a very weak 2014 Senior Bowl RB class. With Ray Rice now canned, I’d pick up and hold Forsett for the time being. He’s had experience running in a Kubiak offense.
– Old man Steve Smith saw a disgusting 15 targets against the Bengals yesterday. He’s the only Smith on the Ravens that I’d want on my fantasy team. When will people realize that Torrey Smith is not a premier receiver?
– Either the Chicago defense is still pure garbage or the Bills offense is not nearly as bad as we thought it was going to be, as E.J. Manuel showed poise under pressure in leading his team to a win. There is hope for Buffalo skill position players yet.
– Don’t fret just yet. Alshon Jeffery’s hamstring injury looks like it’s only a phase, and he should be back in action for you in week 2.
– Though Jay Cutler had a decent showing yesterday against the Bills, he too often showed glimpses of his old self- getting frustrated and throwing ill-timed picks. Here’s a trashy reminder: You’re going to get the good along with the bad this season as an owner, so you’re going to have to just get used to that kind of day for him.
– Washington’s offense looks anemic under Jay Gruden. All this dink-and-dunk isn’t going to cut it with field stretchers like Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. In PPR, it doesn’t hurt either player as badly given volume of targets and receptions, but it’s shaping up to look like a dangerous proposition for now in standard.
– Owners of Arian Foster have to pleased. He was a true workhorse yesterday with over 100 yds on 27 carries and came out unscathed. With one of the best schedules in the league ahead of him, things are looking up.
– Andre Johnson is still quietly doing his thing posting 93 yds on 6 catches. He’s QB proof.
– It’s early in the season, but Bishop Sankey was an absolute afterthought in the Titans offensive game plan entering the game only when the Titans’ lead seemed in hand. He’s got Shonn Greene, Dexter McCluster, and Leon Washington playing ahead of him right now.
– Justin Hunter looks dangerous on the field, and next week against a woeful Cowboys team will be his coming out party.
– Seven carries for Jamaal Charles? Andy Reid should know he doesn’t have a chance playing ball like that. I don’t care how “good” his QB is. Shame on him. Bad Santa.
– Gronk is back. He only played 44% of snaps on a Belicheat-described “pitch count”, but he led the Patriots in targets with 11 and scored a touchdown. Here’s to him staying healthy.
– I actually think Julian Edelman will better his stats from last season this year.
– To everyone who thought Knowshon Moreno’s success last season was based on the situation he was in, say hello to your Week 1 rushing leader coming into Monday Night games.
– I thought I had lucked out getting Tom Brady in the eighth round of one of my fantasy drafts. Right now that value looks about right.
– Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory are in an even time split in New York. I like them both as flex plays moving forward given good matchups.
– Derek Carr looked like a five-year veteran on the field at many times yesterday. He’s going to have the Oakland offense competing in every game this season.
– MJD looked like a veteran of WWII on the field yesterday. Whatever he had, well it seems he’s lost it. Darren McFadden is once again, much to everyone’s chagrin, the back to own in Oakland. Have fun with that.
– Let’s hope Toby Gerhart’s 42 yard performance was based on a hurt ankle and not general ineffectiveness. The White Rhino gave fantasy owners a horn up the cornhole right out of the gate.
– I doubt Allen Hurns will have another day quite like his 110 yard, 2 TD effort, but he will push Marqise Lee for his role in two-receiver sets once Cecil Shorts returns. He’s worth a speculative add in most leagues. Lee is a usually a dependable catcher, but his body-catching style prevented him from making big plays on key targets in Week 1.
– As is, Jeremy Maclin is the only Eagles receiver worth starting and Riley Cooper is likely still a racist.
– Darren Sproles might only get eight carries a game, but that should be enough to make him worth your while, especially in PPR. Owners who took him as a handcuff could conceivably start Lesean McCoy and Sproles certain
– Andrew Hawkins will lead the Browns in receiving this year, should Josh Gordon not return.
– Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell both played better than Ben Tate. I’d rather have either on my fantasy team than Tate. I can’t count how many times we have told you that Ben Tate is a shitty uninspiring NFL runner and has never done anything at the NFL level to prove otherwise.
– Big Ben loves Le’Veon Bell in the passing game. This is going to be a high-octane offense all year, and Bell is going to devastate in ppr leagues.
– Markus Wheaton continues getting force-fed. He’s a must-own in most every format.
– Speaking of Bell, he looks like he’s lost about 30 pounds since his college playing days, and he’s looking sleek. A Chris Johnson / Lendale White comparison of the LeGarrette Blount and Bell committee doesn’t seem near as ludicrous to consider after seeing both in action Week 1.
– Crappy QB in Minnesota? Just hand the ball to Cordarrelle Patterson. He’s a mix of Dez Bryant and Percy Harvin. He’s going to make his nut some way or another every game in this Norv Turner scheme.
– The Rams offense is in trouble. I’m sitting every skill player save maybe Zac Stacy, and only as a flex, until further notice. Brian Quick was nice, but can we trust he’s finally come into his own starting year three in a horrible QB situation?
– I am praying that Tony Romo’s showing against the 49ers was just him getting his preseason in because he missed it. I have a feeling this is just Tony being Tony though.
– DeMarco Murray is going to finish as a top 5 back this season should he stay healthy, and it’s not even that bold of a prediction.
– With teams paying extra attention to a healthy Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin is going to have some big games this season.
– Carlos Hyde is going to run all over this league next season. Owners in keeper leagues and dynasty, rejoice.
– With the Panthers offense firing like that under Derek Anderson, imagine how it’s going to sing when Cam Newton gets back. People have underestimated this team.
– Kelvin Benjamin is only going to get better. You’re welcome RosterWatch nation.
– Mike Evans was one misstep away from leading the Bucs receiving corps in fantasy points.
– Austin Seferian-Jenkins is going to be a man among boys in the NFL once he gets going.
– Josh McCown should be on a short leash in Tampa, but knowing Lovie Smith, he won’t be.
– Indianapolis has a WRBC- wide receiver by committee. We currently hate starting any member of the unit until things stabilize.
– Ahmad Bradshaw already looks like the most effective back in Indy. So much for the Trent Richardson experiment. I wonder if Grigson would still say he’s happy he traded a first-round pick for him.
– Julius Thomas is going to give Jimmy Graham a run for his money as the premier tight end in football.
– If there is ever going to be a time to make offers for Demaryius Thomas, it’s now. He won’t have another game this poor all year.
