Trashman’s Garbage Grab: Week 1

Welcome RosterWatch Nation to the Garbage Grab, my weekly treasure trove of trashy waiver wire and daily league pickups.

Trashman 750

Since it is only Week 1, I expect that this edition’s dumpster studs will apply more to those of you in daily leagues, but redraft owners should definitely keep an eye on (or seriously consider rostering) any of these players as most will hold value into the future and are available in 75-80 percent of leagues.

John Brown WR, Cardinals: Brown is the third receiver in Arizona, but we’ve seen at times in Andre Roberts that the third receiver can be a very productive spot in a Bruce Arians offense. I love Brown this week against a Chargers defense that factors in as the best matchup for receivers in the league. Coach Arians sees Brown playing as much as 60% of Arizona’s snaps. In reference, T.Y. Hilton played 57% of snaps under Arians as a rookie, and he notched 7 TDs and over 800 yards receiving that year.

Marquise Lee WR, Jaguars: Lee is penciled in as a starter, playing in all two-wide sets for Jacksonville. More quick than fast, but with good hands, the former USC star is set up to succeed in a receiving corps in which there is no top dog without Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts now out for Week 1. Lee could very well end up leading the Jags in receiving touchdowns this season, and I can tell you that without batting an eye. He has a nice matchup this week against a Philly team that can be thrown on.

Shaun Hill QB, Rams: Hill, at 34, is past his prime, but his career numbers actually eclipse Sam Bradford’s. That’s not saying much, but the Rams are playing a Minnesota team that gave up the most fantasy points to QBs last season, and Hill does have an arsenal of talented, if not entirely capable, receivers at his disposal.

Mohammed Sanu WR, Bengals: The absence of Marvin Jones has allowed Sanu to come in and make some big strides as an every-down receiver in the Bengals offense. He’s a lanky possession guy with vice grips for mitts, and he’s been a standout in Cincinnati’s preseason action, catching everything that comes his way including some big TD bombs from Andy Dalton. Look for him to carry his consistent production into the regular season starting in Week 1 versus a Ravens team that was the 13th best matchup for receivers last year.

Jace Amaro TE, Jets: Amaro is a beneficiary of his situation, which is often vital in fantasy, as one of the few decent pass-catchers on a shitty shallow Jets squad. Arguably the No. 2 option behind Eric Decker, expect Amaro, who is really just a huge wideout, to do most of his damage as a red-zone target and safety blanket for QB Geno Smith. Don’t worry about Jeff Cumberland either. (Editor’s note: Who the fuck would worry about Jeff Cumberland?) Amaro is already running ahead of Cumberland in passing personnel packages. The Jets face Oakland this weekend, RosterWatch’s 14th-best matchup for TEs to start 2014.

Dexter McCluster RB, Titans: McCluster is now “the Danny Woodhead” in Coach Whisenhunt’s offense. Woodhead ended up with over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 8 TDs last season, and while I don’t quite see McCluster reaching those numbers, he’ll get opportunities to make an impact playing on third downs behind a very, very underwhelming Shonn Greene and alongside a raw rookie in Bishop Sankey. The best time to use McCluster is early on in the season, before Sankey gets his feet all the way under him. McCluster faces his former team this week that’s middle of the pack against the run.

De’Anthony Thomas RB, Chiefs: Speaking of McCluster, Thomas will be filling his very small shoes in the KC offensive scheme. And though he’s listed as a running back, I like Thomas to work quite a bit in the passing game, as KC really doesn’t currently have any stud receivers. To give you an idea, McCluster averaged 50 receptions per year over the last three as a Chief. I like Thomas in PPR leagues that offer points for return yardage.

  1. Need a WR and a flex in a PPR league. C Patterson, Roddy White, Gore, Rashad Jennings. Thanks!

    1. jesus that’s tough. Gore for sure. Love Cordarrelle but I’d choose between Roddy Rashad for the flex and probably give the nod to Jennings in PPR. I don’t think he’ll light the world on fire, but I think he has the highest floor and should be an RB2-type in your flex.

      1. Yes it was….that’s why I asked the experts! Thanks again!

      2. Wait, so who would you use for my WR? Sounds like you want Gore in my flex. I needed a WR and a Flex from those 4 guys.

  2. Wait, so who would you use for my WR? Sounds like you want Gore in my flex. I needed a WR and a Flex from those 4 guys.

    1. You have to go with Roddy there. It’s going to be a high flying affair against the Saints this week.

      1. So Roddy, and then Gore in my flex? Or Jennings?

        1. He’s saying Roddy and Gore

  3. PPR WR question:

I have Keenan Allen, Marques Colston, Terrence Williams and T.Y. Hilton.

I’m playing Colston due to the matchup. I was thinking about benching Allen and Hilton in favor of Williams due the matchup/shootout. Should I stick with Williams or play Allen or Hilton? Thanks!

    1. Even against a stout Arizona defense, Allen is your best bet. San Diego will have to air it out to stay competitive with Arizona.

  4. A guy in my league is garbage at rb. I have ap, lev bell, Stacy, and Fred Jackson. Thinking about offering rivers, desean, and Stacy for brees, aj, and Hyde. Am I crazy? Stacy holds an 9 th round keeper value.

    1. Not crazy at all. We’re hearing more about Benny Cunningham in St. Louis every day. Float the offer.

  5. cooks or Hopkins for flex? 12 team ppr… have ellington but do not think he will play..other wr are dez and keenan allan

  6. Hey guys love your show!

Pick two for a PPR (1 pt) league for Flex….

    Vincent Jackson
    Julian Edelman
    Michael Floyd
    Rashad Jennings

Leaning towards Jennings and VJAX but love Edelman and Floyd’s upside. Thanks fellas!

    1. MicahACarter-

      Jennings + Vjax

    2. I like Jennings and V Jax is a solid play for sure, but I love Floyd against SD’s league worst pass def.

  7. Love the show,

Need TE help, 12 team league standard do I start Charles Clay (Mia) or Jared Cook (STL)?

    thanks

    brew

  8. Need helping deciding which 2 to start among K. Allen @ ARI, M. Evans vs. CAR or K. Benjamin @TB? It’s a PPR league with yardage bonuses…

    In a separate league (non-PPR) I’m torn between starting C. Patterson @ STL or Garcon @ HOU…

    1. renourka-

Very close argument to go with both rookies- we’ll roll our studs in WK1- Allen + Kelvin

      – CPatterson Good Luck

    2. Allen and Evans, unless Cam plays. Then it’s Allen and Benjamin. We like Patterson over Garcon.

  9. Started listening to you guys in Austin……congrats on hitting the big time! Standard, pick 1: Patterson, Hilton, Ingram or Fred Jackson? PPR , pick 1 J. Hunter or M. Lee?

    1. raywags-

Thank you so much. Fred Jackson

Very very close- we like Lee a lot. For now, we are rolling with Hunter as the bigger redzone threat. Good luck

    2. Thanks for staying with us Ray!
I like Patterson and Lee this week.

  10. Do you like Patterson over Sanders?

  11. Where do you hold Arian Foster going forward? Seems like favorable schedule.

  12. tcards19-

He’s an RB1 as long as he stays healthy. Maybe not elite- but still a very good option with upside.

    1. Byron,
Thanks for the input as always. FYI nice to see C. Patterson put up some good numbers. You guys were the first to put him on the radar and was a solid play for me this week.

    2. Just got an offer to receive Arian Foster for Kelvin Benjamin and Toby Gerhart or MJD.

      10 Team Full PPR: 2RB’s 2WR’s 1Flex (RB/WR/TE)

I already have D. Thomas, Alshon, and C. Patterson
RB’s I still have Carlos Hyde and Andre Ellington.
      TE: Jimmy Graham

I was thinking of also picking up Josh Gordon to hold onto with the newly opened bench spot after the trade. Is my head in the right place by building my starting lineup with this trade? If so, should I give him Toby or MJD.

      Thanks

      1. tcards,
pull the trigger on mjd and benj. Also picking up Gordon is a shrewd move.

  13. RW –

Good call on Kelvin Benjamin and Harvin! Hopefully Rashad Jennings can protect my team’s 35.86 point lead tonight against Rivers, Reggie Bush and Novak! After watching Ridley and T-Rich this weekend, I’m a little nervous about my RB2 situation and I’m contemplating adding one of the following players with my #5 priority: A. Bradshaw, Forsett, Crowell, D. Williams, DMC, Ivory, K. Robinson, LaMichael James, John Brown but don’t know if it’s worth dropping anyone in the process… The team is here: https://i.imgur.com/hHFp2MY.jpg and would appreciate any advice!

Also in my other 12 team standard league I dropped Ray Rice and I’m not sure if it’s worth using my #1 waiver priority for any of the following: Hyde, T. West, D. Freeman, DMC, Ivory, S. Greene, Dwyer, Forsett, Crowell, Bradshaw, K. Robinson… My team is in that league is:

    QB: Big Ben
    RB: Lynch & T-Rich
    WR: Julio Jones & Patterson
    TE: Gronk
    Flex: Julius Thomas
Bench: Garcon, K. Benjamin, Andre Williams & J. Gordon

Thanks for any advice guys! Gonna be a good year!

    1. Edit: My opponent also has Larry Fitzgerald tonight! Ahh fingers crossed!
