Scouting Notes: Considered by many to be a running back who happens to play the slot, Marshall was actually a QB before moving to the receiver position in college, where injuries slowed his progression as a redshirt. His playmaking abilities did get some light during OSU’s 2014 season where he had 38 catches for 499 yds and 6 TDs — an OSU freshman number only surpassed by HOFer Chris Carter. Not a speedster, as one can surmise from his Combine and Pro-Day 40’s, Marshall relies on his shiftiness, superb vision and feel for zone-shells, and tackle-breaking ability to get his gains. He sees the field like a QB and seems to know where his defenders are most of the time. This is evident not only in his ability to sell and execute routes, but also in his apt kick-return game. Marshall has fairly big, reliable mitts for his size and is an able blocker as well. It’s his lack of speed that could relegate him to backup duties in the NFL, in addition to his natural if somewhat-raw route running.
Fantasy Outlook: Marshall’s best shot at playing time is going to be his kick-returning prowess, but that is good for little-to-nothing in most fantasy leagues. As a Jet, he’s going to have to compete with ball-hogs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker for looks from Ryan Fitzpatrick’s squirt gun — should he make it to the slot as a starter, and though his multifaceted football past could make Marshall an occasional gadget player, it lends almost nothing to fantasy consistency. The fact that Devin Smith is iffy coming into the season gives me some hope Marshall will find the field, but he’s got much to learn about the WR position, and many scouts see Marshall as a JAG, so he’s going to have to work hard to shed that label in the pros. An iffy flier, Marshall is a take-it-or-leave-it player in dynasty formats that don’t allow return yards.
