What to do With Andre Williams in Dynasty
Andre Williams is clearly hoping for a 2016 breakout.
Hell — type the dude’s name in on google and do a news search.
There’s no less than 30 million articles online about a combination of two events: New HC Ben McAdoo warning the media not to forget about Williams when questioned about the new RB corps and; Williams blabbing to reporters about how he agrees with McAdoo.
So what does this mean for us in dynasty? Well, for one, we’ve always said that Williams will need volume to be successful in the NFL (if his skillset did translate, and at this point can we reasonably say it has?). We were comfortable using a third-round pick on Williams in 2014 rookie drafts. His massive production in college seemed to largely be a function of volume as he was basically the entire BC offense. We can’t forget though, that the boxes he faced as a college runner were almost always stacked with at least 8 defenders against him and he could still wear them down with volume.
Now, with the introduction of Paul Perkins to the RB equation, the legitimate hope for dynasty owners is imagining the future of the New York backfield as a Perkins-Williams platoon. Rashad Jennings is gone after 2016 and will likely not make it through his final year in New York healthy anyway. Shane Vereen can easily be cut post-2016 season due to the nature of his contract. Any true “breakout” for Williams, though, is going to have to occur after those guys are gone as the carries will be too watered-down if all these players remain healthy. Not to mention a player in UDFA Marshaun Coprich who we actually like. Orleans Darkwa is technically still on the roster.
We see Paul Perkins as a late-first to early-second round value in 2016 dynasty because he projects as more than a complement-back alone. If we would have to pick the side of a Williams-Perkins platoon we’d want exposure to in dynasty, we’d certainly say the Perkins-side. For these reasons, we’d be open to floating Andre Williams’ name in offers based on this recent hype for a 2016 second-round pick in standard rookie drafts.
