Scouting Notes: Carroo is a stocky hands catcher who plays bigger than he is — at least in the air and around the football. He’s not afraid to go up and get it, and when he lands it’s almost as if he shrinks, as he’s able to weave in and out of defenders with his impressive vision and innate athleticism. He was one of the most dependable wide receivers in college football having had more offensive coordinators during his time at Rutgers than he had drops. His hands alone could be argued as the best in the class. Carroo’s ability to make would-be tacklers miss lended to his 20.7 YPC over his last year at Rutgers. Carroo has superb timing on his routes as well, a skill that makes him appear more elusive than he really might be — that and quick acceleration — as he’s not a true burner nor does he have great hip movement. Carroo rarely drops a pass, and that’s what sets him apart from many of the top WRs taken in the draft. His biggest question mark is his character. Carroo was arrested for assault after slamming his girlfriend on the ground after a loss, and goodness knows he’s going to have similar circumstances come up in the NFL — especially playing in Miami for the Dolphins. He also has a concussion history.
Fantasy Outlook: Carroo joins a Dolphins team with plenty of young talent in Jarvis Landry and Devante Parker already in the fold. I have questions about whether Ryan Tannehill can sustain productivity for three talented WRs on a regular basis, but I do think Carroo will have his good days — Rishard Matthews certainly did. He’s a top 10 WR pick in dynasty drafts and we’re comfortable with using a second-round pick on Carroo.
