This is a proprietary weekly tool provided by RosterWatch for our PRO community. You can download it as always, or use the new, sortable and user-friendly online version.

It is designed to be a decision-making tool for gauging the defensive opponents your fantasy players face. If you are new to this, our time-tested and most popular flagship in-season tool, the instructions for use couldn’t be simpler, and can be found below.

DO NOT RELY ON “FANTASY POINTS AGAINST” as your primary indicator for player matchups ever again. It is a flawed metric, as you’ll see, which will cause you heartache and struggle.

The rankings represented here are derived via a proprietary algorithm which takes into account not only standard “fantasy points against” metrics, but also (and most importantly) weighted averages and medians of separate individual player and defensive-unit scouting grades for members of the 2018 unit that will be run-stopping, pass-rushing, or covering against the position in question, along with other analytic trends including projected game-script, game-flow, Vegas indicators, volume of total snaps and much, much, more.

INSTRUCTIONS:

To use the tool, think about your fantasy player.

Let’s say you own Jaguars TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and would like to see how he matches up against the defense he faces this week.

First, look down the list and find the Jaguars (ASJ’s team). You will see that the Jaguars’ opponent (OPP) is the Giants in Week 1, and there are four color-coded cells in the horizontal columns marked “OPP vs. QBs,” “OPP vs. RBs,” “OPP vs. WRs” and “OPP vs. TEs.”

These are the OPPONENT’S (in this case the Giants’) OFFICIAL ROSTERWATCH MATCHUP RANKINGS AGAINST THESE GIVEN POSITIONS.

AGAIN – They are not the rankings for the Jaguars, but rather, for the OPPONENT THEY FACE IN THIS GIVEN WEEK (the Giants). In the “OPP vs. TEs” cell for the Jaguars, you’ll notice a big, blue ‘No. 1’. This means Seferian-Jenkins faces our best possible matchup for opposing TEs in Week 1 (the Giants). This is a great indicator for owners of ASJ and is a positive one for those thinking of rostering any of them in DFS contests or streaming the TE position with waiver wire options.

Repeat the same process for other players on your roster as you are trying to decide which players to start and which to sit in season-long leagues. Also use it to identify which upside-plays to roster in DFS contests based on matchup.

With the launch of the online tool, you can now sort by any column: vegas line, over/under, and matchup ranks vs. each position for easy reference.

“1″ is the best (easiest) matchup, “32″ is the worst (toughest).

    Well…. Tuesday and still no sign of Leveon. My big money draft is tomorrow night and I have the dubious 3 hole! I know Gurley is going at 1 but I have no clue who will go at 2. My guess is I might be staring at Lev and Zeke…. it is full point ppr and the sheet says take Bell. My league is pretty dastardly and I can see someone grabbing J Connor earlier than I would want to take him say round 9/10! Right where we are all grabbing Reed and Miller. With Zeke’s center NOT being sent to full IR out for the season and hope he will be back sooner rather than later any final thoughts on on my coin flip dilemma???       Honestly, I would take whoever’s available between Saquon and David Johnson, for exactly the reasons you described. If you take Bell, you’re basically waiting for his weeks 10-16 production, because he was mediocre for the first 2/3 of the season last year, and Zeke’s o-line is the biggest question mark on that team right now.

        Good day Trashman! Thanks for chiming in! I have quite a bit of Zeke already and would love for DJ to come to me. If Lev shows up tomorrow I think the guy at 2 will take him and I will get DJ. If not another share of Zeke it will probably be!       I don’t know if I would go offering the farm as you have decent depth. If you can get him on the cheap and it gives you piece of mind go for it but don’t overpay. Hell he might drop him after week one when he is looking to make roster room for waiver picks. Best of luck this season!

      The matchup tool is strictly ranking the matchups. It’s not taking in to account workload or anything else.

      it just means that the matchup is potentially better for a bears wr or lions rb. the tool is mainly for splitting hairs between two players that are closely ranked. i would not start johnson over ajayi right now. miller v nelson is closer. i could go either way there.

      Close call, keep an eye out for our rankings. I would prob play Keenum. This DEN offense is better than people think and he has solid weapons in the passing game. He’s also a better passer than Bortles. This SEA defense is not what it used to be.

      i think agholor will get a lot of targets with no jeffery and good dbs on the outside for atl. it’s hard to say how a rob will perform though, he could go either way with trubisky.

    I was thinking gurley in dfs as (oddly as a potentially low owned stud) but when I saw your matchup tool, I am scared off of him at 9100 now. Do you think the loss of mack will cause their run defence to plummet ? or was that already taken into account ?

      The Raiders defense is in shambles. This game has a huge O/U. Gurley is a rock solid play. I think Goff is going to go bananas w/ a possibly 3-4 TD monster in Prime Time, while McVay runs up the score on Gruden.

      Obv a ton of that action could / should go to Gurley, esp if the Rams get an early lead which they should. My only concern, that price point is historically tricky, and there are a number of other guys on the rams offense who could also have a big night.

      I wonder if somebody like Fournette slated for a huge workload isn’t a bit of a safer calculation. Cheers BVIC.

    How do you recommend balancing the Draft Cheat Sheets vs. Weekly Matchup Tool/Position Rankings?

    I drafted Jimmy G, but he gets a tough Minnesota defense to start the year. Would I be better off dropping Jimmy G for a Mariota or Dalton for the better Week 1 matchup, then revert back to Jimmy G if/when the matchups get better?
