Scouting Notes:
Cyril Richardson both looks and plays like a highly performing NFL left guard even though he is approximately the same size as promising NFL tackles such as Donald Penn and D.J. Fluker. Richardson’s going to be trouble for a Division I defensive line any way you slice it. Richardson has a low, powerful center of gravity and consistently dominates at the point of attack. He’s bottom-heavy, and he sits into his stance with a condensed squat. He bursts out of the interior line like a cherry bomb.
Richardson is a relentless player, and seems to only have a small bit of “sputtering” to his motor when faced with three-techniques who are extremely gifted in keeping low pad level and anchoring. Richardson’s swivel in pass protection and quick feet make him far less susceptible to being the target of inside stunts than less-athletic interior cogs. Defensive tackles facing off against Richardson have shown that without reach, bend and flexibility – you don’t stand a chance against this true “Bear” of a prospect.
