The Fantasy Fallout: Coming Into Week 9

It won’t surprise me if week 8 turns out to be the highest scoring fantasy week  for the entire season. Things got wacky yesterday, as some new names made big moves while some old flames shrunk down to size. It’s halfway through the season, and we still don’t have a solid read on what is going to happen from week to week as far as production goes. What a year.  Here are some thoughts on yesterday’s games…

-Now is the time to sell Golden Tate. He’s been a monster in Megtron’s absence, but Calvin is likely to return after the bye, and though he’ll still be valuable he won’t be the force we’ve seen the past few games.

-Mike Smith should be ashamed of himself. Week after week he fails to utilize his best playmaking backs in Antone Smith and Devonta Freeman. It shows in the win column.

-Julio Jones has been eerily quiet in fantasy the past few weeks, but he’s primed for an on field explosion. See if his owner bites on a trade offer.

-Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart looked serviceable yesterday, but DeAngelo Williams is slated to come back for Thursday night’s game. They’ll cancel out each other’s fantasy value.

-Don’t get too scared by all this negative Marshawn Lynch talk. Seattle may be wary of him, but they’ll squeeze every drop out of him on the field until next season.

-As we saw yesterday, the departure of Percy Harvin didn’t boost anyone’s value out of the roof. Doug Baldwin will be good, but he’s not the savior of your fantasy team.

-Cam Newton needs to realize what Matt Stafford eventually did with Megatron, and it’s that if you throw the ball up to Kelvin Benjamin he’s going to come down with it more often than not. He’s instant offense, and he’s largely uncoverable.

-It looked like Bernard Pierce was the no.2 back in Baltimore, but a healthy scratch and a two TDs from Zo Taliaferro have shown me otherwise. Justin Forsett is not an every down back, so Zo could creep up on him in carries very shortly.

-Gio Bernard’s hip injury doesn’t look serious, but Jeremy Hill needs to be owned in all leagues regardless.

-It’s been nice watching Mohamed Sanu get sick in fantasy, but A.J. Green is on the cusp of returning to form in week 9. Sell high on Sanu if you can.

-Denard Robinson’s role looks safe in Jacksonville. He’s not a prototypical back, but he’s their best option and that will keep him on the field.

-I said it in the Garbage Grab on Saturday, but people need to stop messing around and pick up Allen Robinson. He’s going to be the guy in Jacksonville all season.

-Brian Hartline is an afterthought in Miami.

-Brian Quick’s run is over. Out for the season, Quick will be replaced by Kenny Britt and Stedman Bailey. Austin Davis’ solid play will get some nice games out of them, but neither will be reliable fantasy plays.

-All Rams TE Lance Kendricks does is score TDs- literally. One target, one score. He’s not startable though, and it just makes Jared Cook unusable as well.

-The Rams backfield would make Bill Belichick proud. Three running backs, each with a handful of carries. It’s sickening. None of them projects to be more than a hopeful flex start.

-I’d rather start Knile Davis than any Rams running back.

-The Chiefs are not in a hurry to get Travis Kelce overly involved on offense. He’s not a TE1 right now folks.

-Jay Cutler alone shows how fantasy value and real life value can be two very different things. He sucks for the Bears, but he’s great for his owners.

-Jonas Gray was the hot hand in the backfield for the Pats this week, but I don’t trust Belichick. Shane Vereen is the only back in New England you can rely on for semi-regular production.

-I thought it was a charade, but Brandon LaFell may actually be worth starting in fantasy leagues.

-With 22 carries yesterday, it looks like Boobie Dixon has the reigns in the Buffalo backfield. Hold onto Bryce Brown though, as that could change real quick like.

-Chris Ivory is the only Jet you can depend on from week to week.

-Here’s to hoping that Vincent Jackson gets traded before the deadline. Either way, Mike Evans in the 1A in Tampa’s offense.

-Austin Seferian-Jenkins has to be hurting over the drop that lost the game on Sunday, but you have to be happy with the way he’s been used in the offense. He should turn it on this second half of the season.

-Matt Asiata can be dropped outside of PPR leagues.

-We got two straight productive games out of Cordarrelle Patterson. Turner is making an effort to implement him, and that’s a sigh of relief for fantasy owners.

-Five Titans WRs had four receptions yesterday. The addition of Mettenberger to the lineup boosts Mettenberger’s value and not really anyone else’s, at least considerably. It is nice to see him airing it out so much though.

-Michael Floyd’s goose egg was painful for fantasy owners, but on the brightside he was targeted deep several times. If just one of those had connected, he would have had a great game. Hold out hope for him.

-I know the Raiders want to get MJD involved, but i’m not sure MJD wants to get himself involved.

-The addition of Martavis Bryant to the starting lineup puts Big Ben into QB1 contention every week.

-By the way, Bryant needs to be added where you can fit him.

-Davante Adams led all Packers in receptions yesterday. He needs to be owned.

-Cobb is quick enough to escape added coverage, Jordy Nelson is not.

-Mark Ingram is back in a big way. Congrats to those who grabbed him before the floodgates opened. Khiry Robinson will take a few of those carries away when he gets back though.

-Hopefully the Saints realize that Cooks gives them an edge, and they continue to find ways to get him the ball.

  1. Std 14 team league. 7 and 1, getting lucky every week with playing the right players and the other teams players under performing. Trying to keep it up to clinch playoffs.

    Qb: Luck
RB: Lynch, Tate, Martin, Sankey, Gore, and Crowell
WR: Wallace, Watkins, Odell, M. Bryant
    TE: Bennett

Going to need a TE bye week fill in but i dont know who is cuttable

    1. And I haveJ. Randle incase Murry goes down

    2. Crowell is the most expendable of that roster.

    3. Might be a little biased but I think Clay Harbor is a good bye week fill in. Cincinnati is awful against the TE and Jax will be playin catch up

  2. Hey guys I need some help. Im currently 3-5 with the 3rd highest scoring team…go figure, so I need to win the majority of games. 12 team PPR, I need two RBs and three WRs. RBs are Jennings, Matthews, Lacy(on bye), Hill, Crowell, Mason and Charles Sims. WRs are Mike Evans, AJ Green, Donte Moncrief, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and Demaryius Thomas. Also just traded John Brown for Dwayne Allen as I have been starting Clay Harbor on a regular basis. Who should I start, and what do you think of the trade?

    1. Hill and Mason are your safest bets, unless Jennings is back. Then Cobb, Thomas, and Evans. I like the trade. Allen will be more consistent than Brown and Harbor

  3. Shane Vereen or Ronnie Hillman this week in a PPR league? Also Cooks or Lafell same PPR league?

  4. I want to pick up Martavis Bryant and/or Donte Moncrief in a 10-team, 5-keeper non-PPR league.

Only problem is I have to cut a WR to pick up a WR.

Would you drop Roddy White, Jordan Mathews, Davante Adams or Keenan Allen for either one? I won’t be keeping any of those four, but think Bryant or Moncrief could emerge.

    1. I would drop Matthews.

  5. Do you guys have a DR you can send my way by chance? My RB corps is severely depleted… I’ve got Jennings, Richardson, Mckinnon Fred Jackson and Smith (dropping Smith this week)
On top of the RB disaster I have some bye week issues with WR’s Megatron, D Jackson, D Adams, Benjamin… I’ve got Gronk and Kelce at TE and Houston and the Pack D

14 team .25 per reception league // I’m thinking about trying to land Matavias Bryant off waivers, and put in a claim for Sims as well and likely drop the Packers D even though Houston has the bye

For whatever reason nobody really trades in our league so I don’t overly want to drop Kelce even though outside of the bye week he’s riding the pine…

Any suggestions would be great. Sitting 7-1 thanks to your guys draft help… Well and for taking Manning

  6. Bye wk fill in standard league RB Tre Mason, or I. Crowell, Torrey Smith or Andre Holmes? Thanks
