NFL Comparison: Kelvin Benjamin

Scouting Notes:

It’s hard to escape the Kelvin Benjamin comparison here. A monster of a man, concurrently being nitpicked by naysayers as a TE-conversion-candidate with inconsistent hands. It sounds familiar. Admittedly, we hate to even go here – because there’s not many receivers we’ve loved more in recent memory – but Funchess shares as many, if not more athletic measurables with Mike Evans than he does with Benjamin. And, while Funchess’ college production may not have stacked up with either of theirs, it’s fair to consider they both played with Heisman winning quarterbacks.

What we saw when live-scouting Devin Funchess was a solid route runner with good hips who can make natural adjustments to the football. He’s a more sure-handed prospect than anyone gives him credit for. His drop rate of 8.8% is not an alarming number. Especially considering his ability to make the brilliant catches that others cannot. Speed and quickness to separate are the obvious grey areas for Funchess, as they were for Benjamin – who was ultimately able to get open as a rookie in the NFL with Transformer-like size and catch radius. Concerns about a lackluster 40 time at the Combine in February, were eased when Funchess ran 4.47 and 4.53 at his pro day.

It scares us to sleep on a giant target who’s shown inspiring stretches of game tape- and possess this type of elite athleticism:

Fantasy Outlook:

Devin Funchess is a player to watch closely on Draft Day. If he lands in an attractive offense, he may very well shoot up dynasty rookie draft boards. He’ll be a risk/reward fantasy commodity, but we’ll likely take our chances with a first-round dynasty rookie draft pick. He’ll be equally important to monitor in redraft leagues as Funchess is the type of player who could have immediate impact as a rookie, especially in the red-zone. We’d love to see him land somewhere like Minnesota, New Orleans, or San Diego.
