Scouting Notes: A converted tight end, Cajuste spent most of his time at receiver at Stanford — and for good reason. Cajuste has the hands and agility of WR but just happens to have the body of a tight end. He actually had the largest hands of any pass catcher at the combine — so it only makes sense that he catches almost everything that comes his way, but it’s his ability to maneuver on the field that is so special. Cajuste had the fastest 3-cone drill of any receiver at the combine, which is absurd considering his size. You can see it on his tape too, though. He glides in and out of coverage, making defenders miss with his smooth shifts in direction. It was a huge surprise that he scored so badly in our combine on-field scores when his college tape was so good in these departments. It’s a good thing Cajuste is so agile, as his so-so speed isn’t going to make anybody miss at the next level. It’s this lack of speed that might move Cajuste to a H-back position in the NFL, or he may end up being a big slot receiver/flexed TE-type.
Fantasy Outlook: On many teams, Cajuste might have a hard time seeing action in his rookie year, but he’s a 49er so the sky is the limit thanks to the roster being mostly pure trash. San Fran has little in the way of WR depth, and Cajuste’s big body and reliable hands play right into game manager Blaine Gabbert’s favor. It’s the projected lack of offense from the 49ers that tempers my expectations for him though. I know Chip Kelly should turn things up a notch, but that is yet to be seen. Cajuste is a late round flier who becomes increasingly intriguing should he get TE and WR designation a la Marques Colston as a rookie.
