RosterWatch Week 14 Matchup Tool

alex bylineWelcome back.

This is a proprietary weekly tool provided by RosterWatch for our PRO community. You can download it as always, or use the new, sortable and user-friendly online version.

It is designed to be a decision-making tool for gauging the defensive opponents your fantasy players face. If you are new to this, our time-tested and most popular flagship in-season tool, the instructions for use couldn’t be simpler, and can be found below.

RW PRO users can download the matchup tool (or access the online tool for use) in the downloads section of their profile by clicking HERE.

DO NOT RELY ON “FANTASY POINTS AGAINST” as your primary indicator for player matchups ever again. It is a flawed metric, as you’ll see, which will cause you heartache and struggle.

The rankings represented here are derived via a proprietary algorithm which takes into account not only standard “fantasy points against” metrics, but also (and most importantly) weighted averages and medians of separate individual player and defensive-unit scouting grades for members of the 2018 unit that will be run-stopping, pass-rushing, or covering against the position in question, along with other analytic trends including projected game-script, game-flow, Vegas indicators, volume of total snaps and much, much, more.

INSTRUCTIONS:

To use the tool, think about your fantasy player.

Let’s say you own Saints WR Michael Thomas, and would like to see how he matches up against the defense he faces this week.

First, look down the list and find the Saints (Thomas’ team). You will see that the Saints’ opponent (OPP) is the Bucs in Week 14, and there are four color-coded cells in the horizontal columns marked “OPP vs. QBs,” “OPP vs. RBs,” “OPP vs. WRs” and “OPP vs. TEs.”

These are the OPPONENT’S (in this case the Bucs’) OFFICIAL ROSTERWATCH MATCHUP RANKINGS AGAINST THESE GIVEN POSITIONS.

AGAIN – They are not the rankings for the Saints, but rather, for the OPPONENT THEY FACE IN THIS GIVEN WEEK (the Bucs). In the “OPP vs. WRs” cell for the Saints, you’ll notice a big, blue ‘No. 1’. This means Thomas faces our best possible matchup for opposing WRs in Week 14 (the Bucs). This is a great indicator for owners of Thomas as well as possibly Tre’Quan Smith, and is a positive one for those thinking of rostering either of them in DFS contests.

Repeat the same process for other players on your roster as you are trying to decide which players to start and which to sit in season-long leagues. Also use it to identify which upside-plays to roster in DFS contests based on matchup.

With the launch of the online tool, you can now sort by any column: vegas line, over/under, and matchup ranks vs. each position for easy reference.

“1″ is the best (easiest) matchup, “32″ is the worst (toughest).

COLOR-CODES
(you like blue matchups best)

BLUE: Best Matchups
LIGHT BLUE: Borderline Top Matchups
WHITE: Neutral Matchups
LIGHT RED: Borderline Bottom Matchups
RED: Worst Matchups

  1. I know it’s a common thread today, but trying to replace Sanders with best option: Reynolds, Pettis, C. Samuel, Gabriel, or Coutee. PPR btw. Will check rankings tomorrow of course, but thought I’d get a quick start. And thanks to Byron for the C Business League shout-out on the Podcast yesterday!! Just finished outside the playoffs….

    Samuels or Peterson – PPR?

    1. Post By Byron Lambert

      Prob Samuels

  3. I can only have one of these defenses

    I have Houston
    Denver available
Whoever I pick I will probably play the next 3 weeks
    Who should I own?

    Alternatively, in PPR I own
Kamara, MGordon, Mixon, GEdwards, SWare, JAdams. G Bernard
I can only play 3 of them

Do I dare drop GioBernard for a second defense for the playoffs?
Cincy has great RB matchups week14-16
Mixon was reported as questionable today

    Thank you

    1. Post By Byron Lambert

pretty sure this was answered in the other thread or on twitter

  4. Should I go with Samuals in my TE slot over Ebron?

    Thank you!

    1. Post By Byron Lambert

Don’t think so, not if Jack Doyle is out again

  5. Ppr need 2 yeldon, gore, peterson, Anthony miller, sanu or amendola?

    1. Post By Byron Lambert

Yuck- prob Peterson + prob just roll w/ the matchup tool on the other- slight preference for Miller w/ Trubisky back.

  6. I probably have to start Edelman over Godwin and Sutton in 0.5 ppr, right?

    1. Post By Byron Lambert

Check the rankings this afternoon- prob so. Prob between Godwin and Edelman

  7. Here we go. 1st place overall in one league with a week 14 bye. 2nd place overall in my other league (3rd round seed based on division). Thanks Rosterwatch!

    1. That said, full PPR… 2RB, 3WR Flex (RB/WR).

      D. Johnson, M. Ingram, J. Samuels at RB.

      D. Adams, T. Hill, A. Thielen, J. Gordon, T. Boyd at WR.

tough bc I know Green is out in Cincy, but not sure if LAC will shut boyd down

      1. Post By Byron Lambert

Think this just comes down to samuels vs Gordon in ur flex

        1. Think Boyd will be contained an isn’t valid option this week?

    2. Post By Byron Lambert

Thank you Kyle! Enjoy the holidays!

Need a flex PpR play. Digs, eckler,Samuel, cohen. Thx men best around

    1. Tough decision, but we’d go with Cohen – have to like a play like that versus the Rams.

  9. Have Jax Defense tonight. Have to win to get in. Does it make any sense to pick up NO in a game that should be higher scoring with more opportunity for turnovers or am I over thinking it?

    Thanks

    1. It makes sense for sure to stream NO versus Jameis who is almost sure to turn the ball over multiple times. If it were me, I’d probably leave in JAX, I’d give it some long hard thought. It’s your playoffs on the line so if you have a strong feeling about NO, by all means go for it.

  10. Standard League: I start Barkley and need one other. Add drops close and we cannot pickup anyone else after Tonight.
I need a kicker so I need to drop Ware, Cook, Mack, J Wilson or Gus Edwards.
I could also drop 2 and just roll with 2 2 backups and pick up a second defense to start like jaguars with there matchup. I have Denver now. I have first round by thanks to your help!

    1. Out of those guys, I’d drop Cook assuming you have another starting TE option, best of luck man.

  11. Last year I made championship game and Greg the leg Z was hurt and out and I couldn’t pick up a kicker and lost by 3 !

    Doug Baldwin
    Courtland Sutton
    Curtis Samuel
    Justin Jackson
    Bruce Ellington

Gotta start 2 of them, PPR, going against the top seed and have to swing for the fences. Please help?

    1. I’d roll with Sutton and Doug Baldwin OR Justin Jackson. If we continue to get word that Jackson will be more featured in order to keep Ekeler healthy as Lynn alluded to on WED, then go with Jackson, the matchup is fantastic. You’ll need to keep an eye on the news. GL.

Few Questions, 2 QB league I have Ryan, Watson, and Trubisky. Who should I start? Was thinking Ryan and Watson but I know Trubisky has a great matchup, just worried about first game back.

Also looking at PPR Flex, have TY in right now but could put in Mixon, Michel, Boyd, or Wilson JR

And last, 1 QB league, I have Rodgers, Rivers, or Luck. Thinking Rivers over Rodgers right now.

    1. 1) Watson and Trubisky
      2) TY murders the Texans but if he’s going to be limited (keep an eye on injury status) roll with Mixon.
      3) Rivers

Lost Olsen at TE. Jonnu, Andrews, or Herndon this week? (.5ppr)

    1. I might actually roll the dice with Andrews given the matchup, they suck for both the others – GL.

I have Brady at QB. Have a chance to trade Robert Woods for Rivers. I have Evans, Hilton, Samuels, MVS, Snead, Reynolds also at WR. We start two WR and a flex. .5 PPR. Also keeper league. Woods can be kept one more year, Rivers too. Pull the trigger? We play a full season in this league, no playoffs, top 4 win $. Playing for second.

Got put in a hole against Henry and fornette dropped the ball should I go Mixon, ware, or wilson?

  18. Post By fiskgrad211@gmail.com

Who should I flex….Robert Woods, Ekeler, or Jackson? I have Chubb & Edwards as my RBs & M Thomas & Hopkins as WRs. It’s a PPR league and we receive .25 per rushing attempt in my league.
